Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014 Directions: Please come in and get your journal. On your next blank page, write today’s date on the top line. Title this page ~ Solving Proportions using Cross Multiplication. Below the date, write the Challenge Question. Challenge Question: What are the two methods to analyze proportional relationships? Warm-Up: Complete the warm-up in your journal with 0 noise level! Use equivalent ratios to solve the proportion. 1. = 2. = 3. =

What do you expect? Using equivalent ratios to solve proportions

Problem 1 The ratio of mystery books to fiction books in the school library is 2 to 3. If the librarian found 120 fiction books on her inventory, how many mystery books will she find?

Think! Set up the ratio Express the quantities given in the problem as ratios Set the two ratios equal to one another to form a proportion: Mystery books Fiction books

Solve! Solve the proportion to find the missing quantity. x 40 X = 80

Problem 2 Apples are on sale 3 for 60 cents, but Kelly needs to buy 5 apples for her lunches this week. How much would Kelly pay for 5 apples?

Think! Set up the ratio Express the quantities given in the problem as ratios Set the two ratios equal to one another to form a proportion: Apples Cents

Solve! Since there is no number that we can multiply 3 by to get 5, we can cross multiply and solve the equation. 3x = 5(.60) 3x = 3.00 3 3 x = 1.00

Presentation: How did we do today? Did we complete the daily warm-up with 0 noise level? Did we maintain classroom operating procedures? Did we take all the notes without being asked several times?

Learning Together: With a partner, you will circulate around the room and complete all 10 Solving Proportion stations. You will have 2 minutes at each station and change stations only when the teacher directs you to. Remember: (1) To write the Problem # down, (2) Show all of your work and (3) Circle your final answer.

Problem 3 The ratio of adults to kids who attended the opening of the new swimming pool was 2 to 7. If there were 24 adults at the opening, how many kids were there?

Problem 4 The rental company includes 4 chairs for every table you rent. If you rent 6 tables, how many chairs would you receive?

Problem 5 John can type 55 words in 1 minute. How many words can John type in 5 minutes?

Problem 6 Beth hiked 14 kilometers in 2 hours. How many hours will it take her to hike 35 kilometers?

Problem 7 The principal is buying sandwiches for the teachers. For every 9 sandwiches he buys, he receives one free. How many sandwiches will the principal need to buy to get 4 free sandwiches?

Problem 8 There are two counselors for every 21 children at summer camp. If this year’s camp has 63 children registered, how many counselors will they need?

Problem 9 A Navy sailor is allowed 7 days of shore leave for every 30 days he or she is at sea. If a sailor spent 75 days at sea on assignment in the Pacific Ocean, how many days of shore leave will the sailor receive when he returns?

Problem 10 When the chef makes salad dressing, he mixes three parts vinegar to five parts oil. If the chef has a bottle containing 15 ounces of vinegar, how much oil will the chef need to mix up his salad dressing.

Problem 11 The ratio of baseball cards to football cards in Juan’s collection is 5 to 6. Juan now has 57 football cards. How many baseball cards does Juan have in his collection?

Problem 12 The ratio of boys to girls enrolled at our school is 11 to 10. If there are 330 boys currently enrolled at our school, how many girls are enrolled?

Learning Together: How did we do today? Did we maintain classroom operating procedures? Did we work toward our learning goals? I can use my knowledge of equivalent ratios and cross multiplication to solve proportions. Did we stay on topic (no sidebar conversations) to complete the tasks?

Just For Me By yourself: Noise Level 0, raise your hand if you need help! Start on the Pizzazz Puzzle WS You will have 20 minutes to work through it and ask for help

Just for Me: How did we do today? Did we maintain classroom operating procedures including 0 noise level? Did we work toward our learning goals? I can use my knowledge of equivalent ratios and cross multiplication to solve proportions. Did we ask Mrs. Camp for help instead of our partner?

Assessment By yourself: Noise Level 0, raise your hand if you need help! Complete the Pizzazz Puzzle WS You will have 15 minutes to work through it and ask for help When you are finished, answer the CQ in your journal.

Wrap-Up Homework: Complete the Pizzazz Puzzle if you did not finish… it is due on Monday at the beginning of class for a HW grade. Supplies: Put your journal in the class bin (if you do not need it at home) and place any supplies used back in the supply bins. How did we do today? Did we maintain classroom operating procedures? Did we work toward our learning goals? I can use my knowledge of equivalent ratios and cross multiplication to solve proportions. Did we complete the tasks?
