3 © CSE and ASE 2011 SS1 science of uv light Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation. You may get a tan when your skin absorbs UV radiation. Too much gives you sunburn. UV damages your DNA. This can build up over many years and lead to skin cancer. UV also has health benefits. It triggers your body to make vitamin D. The sun’s rays contain 3 types of UV: The ozone layer blocks 97-99% of UV radiation from the sun from reaching the Earth’s surface. Which objects give off UV light? Can UV be harmful? How are sunbeds linked to skin cancer? ● UVC is mostly filtered out by the Earth’s atmosphere. ● UVB is what makes your skin burn and is the main cause of skin cancer. ● UVA makes up most of sunlight and makes skin age. It can also cause skin cancer. Sunbeds give off UVA and UVB rays like the sun

4 © CSE and ASE 2011 Programme outline SS2 Introduction : Abigail will explain the science of UV light. Check evidence: She will describe the evidence which supports our claim, and the evidence that doesn’t. Researcher:............................................... Claim: Sunbeds increase your risk of getting skin cancer. 1 2 3 4 Summarise: She will explain how well the evidence supports our claim. Next steps: Abigail will suggest further tests. Or if the claim is wrong, she will suggest one that fits better. supports / opposes / neutral

5 © CSE and ASE 2011 SS3 Reasoner LIFELINE NO support Is there any evidence to support the claim*? Explain HOW WELL the evidence supports the claim* overall. Explain why the evidence opposes the claim* or is irrelevant. Suggest a different claim* that fits the evidence better. Suggest a test to make the claim stronger. Describe the results you expect if the claim* is correct. Does each piece of evidence support the claim*? CHECK EVIDENCE SUMMARISE Say the claim* could be wrong. Suggest a claim that fits the evidence better. A LITTLE support Yes A LOT of support Yes No More than 1 piece of evidence1 piece of evidence NEXT STEPS * or hypothesis

6 © CSE and ASE 2011 Evidence 1 Increase in natural UV radiation 1980-1997 Increase in yearly UV dose 11-13% 8-10% 5-7% 0-4% Evidence 2 * Irradiance is a measurement of how strong radiation is. Evidence 3 SS4 year trips abroad from the UK (thousands) Evidence 4
