2 ADMINISTRATION OF EPINEPHRINE AUTO-INJECTOR: TRAINING PROGRAM PART 1:

3 NURSING OBJECTIVES: To comply with D.O.E Health Services Policy and Procedural Requirements. To provide staff training by: *Educating staff in recognizing symptoms related to anaphylaxis. *Instruct staff in proper method of administering epinephrine auto-injector in the event of a life- threatening allergic reaction. *Specific!!! ONLY to those students who carry an epinephrine auto-injector for self administration.

4 HOW ARE YOU AFFECTED BY THIS LAW…..?????? ALL SCHOOL SPONSORED FUNCTIONS which includes: –Athletics –After school activities such as clubs –Field Trips

5 Because… All staff members should be aware of students “under their supervision” who may require administration of epinephrine. And……be prepared to take action.

10 WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ALLERGIC STUDENT Symptoms vary from: Mild to moderate to the severe, life threatening reactions….

11 MILD ALLERGIC REACTIONS INCLUDE: Mouth: itchy, tingling Skin: hives, rash, swelling Stomach/Gut: ache, nauseous General: chills, fatigue

12 ALLERGIC REACTION PRESENTING ON SKIN

13 SWOLLEN ARM FROM INSECT BITE

14 AS SYMPTOMS DEVELOP= WHAT TO EXPECT –Mouth –Skin –Stomach/Gut –General feeling –Heart –Lungs

15 HOW TO HELP… SOMEONE HAVING A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION

16 First…..RELAX…… AND BREATH!!!!!

17 INITIAL AND IMMEDIATE ACTION: Do not hesitate! Call 9-1-1 … or have someone call for you. Student must ALWAYS be transported to Emergency Room, even if symptoms subside.

18 HOW TO ADMINISTER THE EPINEPHRINE INJECTOR… IN A FEW EASY STEPS…..

19 Epinephrine 2 - pak Jr. pak – less than 66 pounds Adult pak – over 66 pounds

20 PREPARING TO ADMINISTER EPINEPHRINE:

21 PULL OFF GRAY CAP

22 PRESS BLACK TIP TO OUTER THIGH AND PRESS UNTIL YOU HEAR A “CLICK” SOUND. HOLD 20-30 SECONDS.

23 MASSAGE INJECTION SITE FOR 10 SECONDS Continue monitoring student Student must be transported to hospital

24 DISPOSAL OF INJECTOR GIVE USED INJECTOR TO FIRST – AID OR EMS PERSONNEL FOR DISPOSAL

25 WHY BECOME A DESIGNEE??? TO HOPEFULLY SAFE A LIFE………………..
