TMCC Faculty Senate Curriculum, Assessment & Programs Committee Master Course Outline Guide March 2012

Lab Hours Calculation Lecture = 15 hours per credit (based on a 50 minute hour). Lab = 45 hours per credit (based on a 50 minute hour). Clinical Hours – for nursing and allied health programs. See department for detail. Studio Art (consult department) Lecture/Lab = 20 hours per credit (based on a 50 minute hour).

Course Description Good Example: ANTH 102 - Biological and evolutionary origins of humans, with consideration of population genetics, living primates, fossil records and human variation. Includes eight laboratory experiences. Satisfies UNR science core curriculum. Identify if the course is NON-transferable – for example: “This course may not transfer to a baccalaureate degree of art or science within the universities in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE).”

Pre-Requisites If making changes, include original pre- requisites All courses applying to be general education for AA/AS degrees must put pre-requisites on associated with reading readiness: – English 098 or 101 or 102 or Reading score of 78- 85 – Co requisite English 098, reading score of 86+ or AP score of 2+ or SAT ENG of 440+ or ACT ENG of 18+ or equivalent.

Objectives Course objectives describe the intended results of the course. Course objectives should be broadly stated so they can serve the course for many years. Course objectives identify key elements that must be taught every time the course is taught. EFFECTIVE OBJECTIVE STATEMENT The objectives of this course are: --to introduce the principles of design theory --to reinforce knowledge of construction applications --to identify common characteristics of architecture over time PROBLEMATIC OBJECTIVE STATEMENT In this course, students will --gain knowledge of design principles --understand construction applications --gain an appreciation of architecture over time

Student Learning Outcomes and Measures Outcomes describe the achieved results of the course. Outcomes must reflect the specific and measurable knowledge, skills, and abilities students demonstrate as a result of their experiences in the course. Outcomes should reflect what you need to assess; there is no required number of outcomes. Outcomes should logically relate to objectives. EFFECTIVE SLO: PROBLEMATIC SLO: --Students will explain basic design--Students will understand theory. basic design theory. --Students will apply construction --Students will know how to techniques to architectural problems. solve architectural problems --Students will incorporate elements --Students will appreciate the of historical architecture into projects. impact of architecture.

Measures for Student Learning Outcomes You must identify the ways in which you will measure your SLOs. What specific activities will students complete that will enable you to determine a level of proficiency in relation to the student learning outcomes? How will the measurement of these activities provide you with solid evidence about whether or not students have achieved the outcome? Since the measures on the Master Course Outline represent the agreed-upon measures for the outcomes for a particular course, all faculty teaching that course must agree to use those measures. At TMCC, in addition to identifying the measure itself we identify the method by which we evaluate the measure. Just as objectives and outcomes identify the essential elements that are taught in all sections of a course, measures ensure that student work is evaluated consistently across sections.

Course Transfer Status Complete the NSHE Long Form. Complete the MCO form which identifies if the course is transferable or not. Attach an e-mail from institutional registrars approving transfer status. * If you want your course to meet the core curriculum at a Nevada university, you must gain approval from that institution.

TMCC General Education Status If you would like your course to meet TMCC General Education Status for an AA or AS, you need to indicate this to the CAP Committee for review. If you would like diversity recognition of your course, you must contact the VPAA/SS before bring forth your MCO to CAP.
