The Cell- the basic unit of living things. The following questions should be answered as completely as possible. Draw, write, diagram or discuss your solution- there is NO one correct answer. If at any time you wish to skip a question do so, but come back later as you should finish all the questions as completely as you can.

Microscopes The most simple microscope could be a drop of water. What do you picture when you picture a scientific “microscope”? Draw and label the picture you have in mind.

Microscopic images When you “magnify” something…what happens to the image? When you “focus” something…what happens to the image? What is the difference between these two processes?

Cells Imagine if you could ONLY look at different living things from very close up; Could you separate those living things into a few groups? What would those groups be?

Cells Suppose you had a human body cell on a slide…what would it look like close up. Try to give any parts you would see names. Now do the same if you had a small part of a leaf, or stem of a plant.

“Cells do the same things that all organisms do.” Read the above statement. Now make a list of the “things” that organisms do and be general enough so that it would apply to plants as well as animals.

Stem cells? Supposing that you have heard of “stem cells,” what do you think they are? Why do you think scientists want to study them?

Blood!!!!!!!!!! Blood is a very unique type of cell; What makes it so unique? How many special types of cells are there in the body? Is your blood red, or blue? (This one drives me crazy!!)

The life of a Cell… Write about or diagram the life of a cell. What things happen to it during it’s “lifetime?” Name the stages of it’s life. (Hint: they are not much different from your “stages!”)

YOU’RE DONE! Be sure to turn your paper(s) in to Mr. Rajnowski! Then begin the Microscope Lab. You will be getting familiar with the parts and functions of the microscope. Remember to carry with both hands and handle gently! These are expensive pieces of equipment! Report any problems to Mr. Rajnowski right away!
