2 Discovering Your Interests In order to find your ideal career, you must first consider your interests  Your interests are your favorite activities

3 PEOPLE Where Do Your Interests Lead? INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Describes activities involving people -Do you enjoy working with people? Do you make friends easily? Includes using ideas, facts, words and figures -Do you enjoy reading? Do you like doing research? Involves working with things, such as tools, machines and other equipment -Do you enjoy making or fixing things? Do you work on the computer for hours without noticing time?

7 Comparing Skills and Aptitudes Skill  The ability to perform a task due to training and experience;  Once you’ve learned something it becomes a skill  Ex) you can read and write Aptitude  Your potential for learning a skill  Having an aptitude is like having a knack for something, like drawing, singing or playing a sport

8 Different Kinds of Skills Job-specific skills the skills necessary to do a specific job Ex) programming a computer, performing surgery Transferable Skills General skills used in school and in various types of jobs; these types of skills are always necessary, regardless of the career you choose -Communication Skills-Organizing and planning Skills -Listening Skills -Teamwork Skills -Problem-solving Skills-Social Skills -Technology Skills-Adaptability Skills -Decision-making Skills

17 CAREER REPORT ACTIVITY Work in pairs and interview your partner about his or her personality – exchange “Express Yourself” exercises with each other Based on your partner’s answers, think of TWO careers that may fit this personality. You will then write a one paragraph “career report” for your partner and explain your career selections for them. Begin your report with “You would be a good _______ because you are …..”
