*CITIZEN *LEGAL PERMANENTE RESIDENT *NATURALIZED CITIZEN *JUS SOLI *JUS SANGUINIS *ALIEN *UNALIENABLE RIGHTS *PERSONAL RIGHTS- *POLITICAL RIGHTS- *ECONOMIC RIGHTS- *PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY *CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY Citizenship Vocab:

Questions to think about and answer. What are the rights of citizens ? What are the responsibilities?

What is a citizen ? Citizen – as person who is a legal member of a self- governed community, such as a nation or state. In this country citizenship is not based on a person’s race, gender, or ethnic origin. Each citizen possesses equal rights under the law.

How to become a U.S. citizen …. Legal Permanent Resident – this is someone who lives in the United States legally but is not a U.S. citizen Naturalized citizen- living legally in the U.S. for 5 years, then pass a test showing that they know the constitution and U.S. history. Has to have good moral character and demonstrate the ability to communicate in English. Then the children of this person if minors will also be naturalized citizens.

Would you be able to become a citizen ? Test of Citizenship

Our government gives us certain rights as citizens. These rights are protected by our constitution. Personal rights- these are the rights that allow people to do as they wish as long as it does not break the law, interfere with public order, or interfere with the rights of other citizens. Political rights- are the rights that allow citizen to participate in the political system. Economic rights- are the rights needed to earn a living and to acquire and transfer property. Examples…..

With Great power comes great responsibility Citizen should not only be aware of their rights but also learn to use them responsibly Personal responsibility – are obligations that each person assumes individually. Civic responsibility – are obligations that each person has to society

Civic Responsibility The country is depending on YOU!

1. Obeying laws What if you think a law is unjust do you still have the responsibility of obeying it ? Some people say that the responsibility to obey laws has limits since no government is perfect. Many citizen have paid the price for disobeying the law. Martin Luther King Jr. Vietnam many people burned their draft cards and refused to serve in the army. Women's rights advocates were arrested for attempting to vote in an election before it was legal. Our system does allow citizens to try to change laws they do not believe in

Group debate: Groups of 3 or 4 debate these two questions What should a person do when he or she thinks a law is unjust? Give examples to support your opinion…. Suppose you cannot agree on what is in the common good. Should you pursue your own interests or still try to consider the interests of others? Explain your answer and provide examples.

2.Being informed about public issues – It is part of the democratic process to be informed on the issues. -issues that affect national level, state and local. - A concerned citizen should follow each of these things. - What happened last week in Boston ?

3. Voting It is not only a right to vote but a responsibility! If people do not vote the put the future of their country in some one else's hands.

4.keep watch over political leaders and governmental agencies, The leader in our country answer to0 the people. It is necessary to monitor how they are doing after they are elected. This way we know if they should be reelected.

5.participating in the community 5.participating in the community The community is where you live and spend time.  Therefore it is your civic responsibility to work for the betterment of the community around you.  Education  Parks and recreation  Library  Beautification

6. Paying Taxes Tax dollars are put to work to improve the Country, State and community that you are a part of on a daily basis.  Taxes paid at all levels should help the general tax payer.  Though you have no say in how your tax dollars are spent you do have a say in who you put in power that chooses how they are spent.

7. Respecting the Rights of Others Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others  Freedom is what this country is built on a  you have the right to freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly etc.  And so does every other citizen of the U.S.  Your freedoms only go so far……… not to impede the rights of others.

8.Serving as a Juror Part of having the right to a trial by jury is that you must also take time out to serve in the jury for someone else. If no one was willing to serve the system would not work.

9. Serving in the armed forces. Part of having freedoms is that often others try to take them away. This means that as citizens we should be able to protect our freedoms and the freedoms of others if nessisary. The draft has been implemented but further than that it is an honor to defend those rights that we hold dear.

Fulfilling personal and civic responsibilities are necessary for a self-governing, free and just society. Write a short 2 paragraph essay explaining any additions or changes you would make to these civic responsibilities and explain why.
