Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Programme 10:00 - 10:10Introduction to ROVESTA Miljø, 10:15 - 10:40Relation between authorities and the laboratory 10:40 - 11:15Waste Water, freshwater and sludge Sample Techniques and requirements, standards, etc. Analysis methods Presentation of procedures 11:15 - 12:00Presentation of the laboratory and equipment

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 ROVESTA Miljø At the present our staff is 129 –Laboratory:71 –Consultancy:37 –Management and support:21 Turnover in 2005 was 51 mill. DK kr. –Lab: 24,3 mill. –Cons.: 22.8 mill.

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Locations

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Environmental sector Staff at present is 37 consultants A broad selection of relevant educations: M.Sc. in Biology Engineers M.Sc. in Agronomy M.Sc. in Environmental Planning M.Sc. Geology Environmental engineers

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Main Tasks Sampling, microbiological and chemical analyses ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ Environmental inspections Granting of integrated permits Soil pollutions Consultancy tasks for municipalities and private companies Project participation (EU, DEA etc.)

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Competence Areas Waste plans Waste products for agricultural purposes Toxic waste Waste recycling Soil pollutions Agribusiness environmental control Wastewater permits Air pollution Noise Measurements Green Accounts

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Competence Areas Environmental Management (ISO 14001) Cleaner Technologies Legionella Waterworks supervision Water supply plans Water streams Pool water

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Authorities and the laboratory Inpections according to legal demands: Inspections of industrial plants Inspections of agricultural plants Integrated Permits Wastewater permits Soil pollution Water treatment plants All kinds of work related to environmental legislation (Noise, complaints, etc.) Larger plans for municipalities (Wastewater, Drinking Water, Solid Waste)

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Inspection of industrial plants

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Inspections of industrial plants New industrial plant: –Granting of an integrated permit or making a wastewater permit –Conditions for self control typically include regular analyses of relevant parameters in the wastewater, flow-dependant sampling, measuring total amount of wastewater. Sampling must be done when the plant is in normal operation. –Analyses must be done by a lab which has an accreditation under the Danish Accreditation and Metrology Fund – DANAK –The lab contacts the industrial plant with a service offer. The plant is free to choose whatever lab they may wish as long as it has an accreditation under DANAK Control of the conditions contained in the integrated permit and/or the wastewater permit –The results of analyses are sent to the authorities who then control that the results are in accordance with the conditions stipulated in the permit. –Legal actions are taken when the results not are in compliance with the conditions

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Water treatment plants

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Water treatment plants The quality of potable water is regulated by legislation Control is carried out by municipalities or ROVESTA Miljø by yearly inspections and regular analysis of the water. Water treatment plant pay for the analyses sampled by a lab (public or private). Deviation from the limit value causes immediate contact from our lab to the consultant involved. The water treatment plant is contacted immediately for a dialogue of proper measures to be taken and for follow-up analysis etc.. The authorities do a lot of guiding and nursing of smaller water treatment plants to ensure that the public always has a high quality of potable water

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Public swimming pools

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Public swimming pools The quality of pool water is regulated by legislation Control is carried out by municipalities or ROVESTA Miljø by yearly inspections and regular analytic results of the pool water. Analysis is paid by the pool owner (public or private) Deviation from the limit value causes immediate contact from our lab to the consultant involved. The pool owner is contacted immediately for a dialogue of proper measures to be taken and for follow-up analysis etc.. The authorities do a lot of guiding and nursing of smaller swimming pools to ensure that the public always has a high quality of their pool water

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Soil pollution

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Soil pollution Control samples taken by authorities before taking legal actions Soil pollution investigations for public offices, companies and others Close contact to the chemist in interpretation of chromatograms to define the age and origin of oil products (Fuel oil, Diesel, etc.) Screening of samples with unknown substances Response time and price are of the essence

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Authorities and the laboratory Synergy effects: –Close contact between laboratory and inspectors –Short communication ways –Quicker response to ”customer” when results are higher than limit values –Common understanding of environmental problems Possible problem areas –Non integrated systems

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 Authorities and the laboratory Questions?

Steffen Bloch Nielsen, Juni 2006 ROVESTA Miljø – For a better environment
