Norway Norway has a mostly cold climate because of its far northern location. About one-third of Norway lies north of the Arctic Circle. Norway is wealthy because of it oil and natural gas resources and because of its fishing industry. Norway is a parliamentary democracy. It has a monarchy but is governed by an elected prime minister. Norway is NOT part of the European Union.

Sweden Sweden is wealthy because of its abundant natural resources including iron ore and pine forests. Most of Sweden’s people live in cities in the southern lowlands. Stockholm is the country’s capital and largest city.

Finland Most of Finland’s wealth comes from its huge forests of spruce, pine, and birch. The ancestors of the Finns probably came from what is now Siberia in Russia. Helsinki is the capital of Finland.

Denmark Most of Denmark is made up of a peninsula known as Jutland. Denmark also includes nearly 500 islands. Denmark exports butter, cheese, bacon, ham, porcelain, and LEGO® blocks. Denmark’s location makes it a link between mainland Europe and the Nordic countries.

Iceland The people of Iceland use the hot springs and geysers for geothermal energy, or heat produced by natural underground sources, to heat most of their homes, buildings, and swimming pools. Some Icelanders speak Danish because Denmark ruled Iceland for centuries. Three effects of Iceland’s location on a fault are presence of geysers and hot springs, geothermal energy, volcanic activity
