Value Refers to the lights and darks. Value describes form. Value creates a focal area or center of interest. Value defines space.

Light values often suggest happiness, light, joy, and airiness. Dark values suggest sadness, depression, loneliness, and sometimes mystery.

Can you see the range of lights and darks (VALUE) in this painting?

Value describes whether the subject has volume or not. Value describes the kind of texture the surface of the subject has. Value shows where the light source is located. Without value: objects appear flat lifeless uninteresting

Blocked Value Scale This demonstrates the range of lights and darks.

How effective is the value range in this picture? Do these objects have volume or are they flat? What kind of texture is created with value? Where is the light source coming from in this picture?

Some people claim value is the most important Element of design. This painting shows a good range of value contrast.

How effective is value in this drawing? Would you be able to see the folds without the lights and darks? Where is the focal area?

This skeleton is a good example of how important value is in a simple drawing. It defines space in this example.

A simple pen/ink watercolor wash showing a range of value.

This is a drawing of simple forms showing Value. We can see the light source, shaded side and shadows.

The importance of value! What does value do for these objects?

Gradual shading has 4 different areas; highlighted area, middle values, dark value and the shadow.

You are going to do three exercises to demonstrate value before moving on to the final drawing/project. 1.You will be completing a simple worksheet to help you decide when to use block value or gradual value change and to practice both. 2.The second exercise will be to create a non-objective composition (see handout) 3.The third mini project is going to be of leaves using oil crayon to demonstrate value with color.

We are going to use the skeleton image to create our value drawings.

Scale of the skeleton The average person is about 8 heads tall. When we draw the skeleton we will LIGHTLY divide the paper as seen to the right. This will help with proportion of your skeleton.

Value and space You will draw the skeleton from the model. This is called a contour drawing when you draw the edges of an object. You will then shade/add value to your skeleton. Focus on where the lights and darks are…really look! The final step will be to add an interesting space/op art 1 pt. perspective component to it.
