3 What will stay the same? Our philosophy – continue our journey on the “bridge” Continue with leadership development and the seven habits Habit 1: Be proactive. You’re in charge. Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind. Have a plan. Habit 3: Put first things first. Work first, then play. Habit 4: Think win-win. Everyone can win. Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Listen before you talk. Habit 6: Synergize. Together is better. Habit 7: Sharpen the saw. Balance is best. 9 period day Events and support – With a new twist!

5 What is different for our 6 th graders?

6 PRE – AP FOR ALL The state of Texas designates three levels of instruction for the core academic areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies: Traditional  Pre-AP (Preparation for Advanced Placement) – Challenging coursework that engages students on a high level in preparation for high school AP courses. AP (Advanced Placement) – Advanced high school coursework taught on a college level. Students who pass AP exams can earn college credit.

7 PRE-AP FOR ALL Lovejoy believes that every student should have the opportunity to achieve his/her highest potential. To that end, all regular core academic 6 th grade and middle-school courses are taught at the Pre-AP level. Not all students will choose to continue into the high school AP program, but all students are given the opportunity to prepare for this option.

8 New Curriculum Social Studies – World Cultures Math – 60% of the material is new – proportions, fraction, integers Reading – Depth of analysis with literary terms Science – 50% of the material is new – language of the discipline is more sophisticated and a big focus on physical science GT – available to choose GT classes for all 4 core areas – Math, Reading, Science, & Social Studies

10 A Typical 6 th Graders Day 4 core subjects – Pre AP Model for ALL begins Math – 90 minutes - Accelerated Language Arts -90 minutes Social Studies – 45 minutes Science - 45 minutes Electives - 2 - 45 minute sections a day Elective Rotation: PE Art, STEM – (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), Choice: Band, Orchestra, Choir (will attend everyday) Lunch – 30 minutes Recess – 15 minutes GT Classes offered: The amount of time in each class will be the same as the other core classes. Math – 7 th & 8 th grade – sets up students to take Algebra I as 7 th graders Language Arts Social Studies Science

11 SPED Services 6 th Grade Math Resource Language Arts Resource Co-Teach Model for Language Arts & Math Inclusion support as needed for all subject areas.

12 Registration Students will have a presentation by Ms. George to learn about 6 th grade on Thursday, February 12 th. Students will receive Registration paper.Registration paper. Please complete and sign with your child. 6 th Graders will turn in their registration papers on Tuesday, February 24 th to 3 rd period teachers. During Social Studies on Thursday, February 26 th, students will register for their classes on the computer at school.
