3 References and Bibliographies Enable readers to obtain additional information about what you have told them. Reference lists only include sources that were actually used in the document. Bibliographies also include sources for background information and further reading.

4 References in Text Enables readers to locate the information source in the reference list. APA style cites references in text with an author-date citation system. –Walker (2000) compared reaction times… –In a recent study of reaction times (Walker, 2000)… –In 2000, Walker’s study showed… References cited in text must also appear in the reference list and vice versa.

5 Reference List Reference lists appear at the end of a document. Provides information to identify and retrieve the source. Should be double-spaced, in alphabetical order. Uses the hanging indent paragraph style.

7 Reference Tools Electronic reference tools enable you to download citations, manage references, and organize sources Some reference tools include –Reference Manager –EndNote –ProCite Free trials available on-line Ask Tufts librarians for a tutorial

8 Fact Checking Fact checkers check factual assertions against source material. Fact checking helps avoid accidental, factual mistakes. Every statement in your article needs to be verified with information in your reference list.

9 Annotating Enables quick fact-checking Maps every fact to where it can be found in source documents Can be done on hard copies or electronically

12 Three-Part Activity Write a one-paragraph summary of the information provided. Annotate your summary for fact- checking. Fact check your classmate’s summary.

13 Homework Finish your feature article Annotate your article for fact-checking Write at least three questions you’d like to have answered by our career panelists
