1 Essay Analysis and Commentary

2 Essay Analysis Each group needs one of each of the essays and three highlighters. There are 4 to a group and 4 essays. Each member of the group will have a different essay. Each group member needs a pink, yellow, and green highlighter. Essay Round-Robin You will have 2 minutes to read an essay. You will have 3 minutes to fill out the commentary for that essay. Then you will switch. Keep the last essay.

3 Essay Analysis Write what you think the “Big Idea” green word is for this essay at the top. Write what you think the prompt may be at the top of the essay. Put a star next to the thesis statement. With the last essay you will: Highlight different portions of the essay. Green – at least three times (if possible) the essay relates back to the green word. Pink – at least three times the author shows you the anecdote/metaphor. You feel like you are there. Yellow – at least two times the author is answering a prompt. You have 5 minutes.

4 Essay Analysis Discuss with your group the differences between the essays. Rank the essays best to worst 4 is the best, you might read it just because. 1 is the worst, it would be thrown in the circular file. ** Compare rankings with each group.

5 Essay Structure How were the best essays put together? Anecdote/Metaphor vs. Prompt Response How will you put your essay together? Anecdote/Metaphor vs. Prompt Response Make sure it is interesting AND answers the prompt.
