2 Population Expansion What happened to the population of Europe between 1750 and 1914? How did the Industrial Revolution contribute to the population growth?

3 Answers Population grew from 140 million to 463 million Increased food supply, better diets, healthier people, medical discoveries, public sanitation (later), more jobs.

4 Problems of Growing Cities What happened to the living conditions as people poured in to work in the mills? What did rural people have that city people did not?

5 Answers Living conditions deteriorated as cities became overcrowded. Rural people could usually count on help from their neighbors.

6 Working in a Factory Why were wages so low? What happened to a worker who was injured on the job?

7 Answers Supply of unskilled workers was large, so wages were kept low. The injured worker was thrown out of work if he or she got injured on the job.

8 New Social Structure Before the Industrial Revolution –Wealthy landowning aristocracy held highest position in society –Below was a relatively small middle class (merchants, lawyers, clergy) –Skilled workers (shoemakers, potters, silversmiths) –Vast majority-farmers, farm workers

9 New Social Structure During the Industrial Revolution –Wealthy landowning aristocracy, (losing power) –Wealthy and powerful upper middle class of factory and mine owners, bankers, professionals, and merchants –Lower middle class artisans and business clerks –Very large class of factory workers
