1 Second Step: Lesson 13, pt. 1 Substance Abuse Prevention: Making Good Decisions

2 Objectives:  Students will be able to:  Apply the Action Steps to making decisions about resisting substance abuse.  Understand how friends can support each other to remain substance-free.

3 Making Good Decisions:  “It’s not hard to make good decisions when you know what your values are” Laura  Review Action Steps for problem solving:  Analyze the situation  Brainstorm options  Consider each option  Decide/Do the best option

4 Daniel’s Decision: group Activity  Distribute Handouts 13A & 13B  Read the story on Handout 13B  Determine what decision this character might make to avoid drinking and using drugs (use Handout 13A).  Use the Action Steps (A-C).

5 Second Step: Lesson 13, pt. 2 Substance Abuse Prevention: Making Good Decisions

6 Daniel’s Decision: Cont.  Work with group on Action Step D: Decide/Do the best option.  Create a plan for Daniel.  What will Daniel do?  What will Daniel say?

7 Action Steps Debrief:  Analyze Daniel’s situation  Brainstorm options  Consider each option  Have each group report their plan of action for Daniel.

8 Making Good Decisions:  Making good decisions becomes more important as you grow older.  “You are a product of your relationships” (Who you associate with is who you will become).  Research tells us that if you have friends who use alcohol or other drugs, you are at a much greater risk of becoming a user yourself.

9 Watch Video:  Interviews with teens who have made good decisions.  Play Video 13.4 Video Debrief: Really good to surround yourself with a community of friends who believe and like the same things. What are some other examples of friends supporting each other?

10 Partner Exchange:  Make a list of what you could say or do with your friends to support your commitment not to use.  Share Ideas: What were some of your ideas?

11 Review:  People’s decisions are based on the influences around them.  Using Action Steps to make decisions.  Ways to support friends in avoiding substance abuse.  Final Wrap-up:  Distribute the Reflective Writing Assessment.
