Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Computer-supported knowledge sharing in co-located environments Yasufumi Hirakawa, Harumi Mase, Eiji Tokunaga and Tatsuo Nakajima. Waseda University, Dep. of Computer Science

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Contents Introduction Problems Approaches Model about face-to-face knowledge sharing Scenario : System for knowledge sharing Survey Survey results Future work Conclusions

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Introduction Our experiences can convert into digital data –Pictures, Diaries(Blogs), Documents , Bookmarks, Web browsing histories, histories about using devices, and so on… –A ubiquitous computing environment has been realized progressing technologies for digitalize our experiences digital data has been increasing. Sharing users knowledge –we often share digital data : documents, show pictures... –We can noticed new ideas

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Problems We must choose, store and edit the data. –Need a lot of time e.g. presentation –Increasing our data Ubiquitous computing environment –sensors Limited ways of communications thorough a network –difficult to communicate enough information gesture emotion –you are angry, laughing or crying? reference term – What do you indicate with the word, ”this”?

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Approaches To realize sharing our knowledge fluently... We propose a system records and aggregates data automatically –our system record and show data. doesn’t limit ways of communication, and progress sharing user knowledge. –Tabletop Display »face-to-face communication figure: tabletop display

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Model about face-to-face knowledge sharing

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Scenario : System for knowledge sharing

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Scenario : System for knowledge sharing They use Firefox browser that was installed a extension to get web browsing histories and send them to a remote server. Take a rest to change our thinking

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Scenario : System for knowledge sharing There are four RFID Readers on the tabletop display. Each Participant puts a personal device embedded a RFID tag on the RFID Reader. Our system authenticates tags, and get participants’ data from a remote server. The system shows the data on the table.

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Survey We conducted a survey –at Embedded Technology 2005 Japan. –Participants in the exhibition We explained our scenario with our prototype system –In the form of a questionnaire based on three main issues –1) Whether our system is useful for users or not –2) What designs of merged experiments are suitable for users –3) What functions are required for fluent knowledge sharing in the system –Informal observation of people using our prototype system

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Survey results We obtained 124 responses Users want to… –use our prototype system More than 80% –share web histories about news and new commercial goods. More than 50% users –use our system with senior workers, bosses, their friends, their followers, junior subordinates... in office, school, restaurant... –75% of the users are uncomfortable to share their all experiences to others

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Survey results (cont’d) –Users requested new functions use keywords for searching to notify whether you had already seen to extract link structures

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Future Work To extract relations between users’ web browsing histories and external websites The proper expression of “merged experiences” and maintaining privacy Automatic context sensing Support other digital data –not only web browsing histories Support for building users’ experiences as digital data on tabletop display Implement the functions users requested

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Conclusions We proposed a system, face-to-face knowledge sharing using “merged experiences” that are automatically constructed from each user’s digital data. –Face-to-Face knowledge sharing tended to be promoted by displaying merged experiences on a tabletop display.

Waseda Univ Nakajima Lab Interaction Group Thank you for listening.
