4 Assessment Summary & Writing Context In your essay, you will take a position on the issue(s) presented in the prompt. You will support your argument with evidence from The Crucible and use “Sinners in the Hands of and Angry God” as additional support (MELEL-Con). Additionally, this prompt requires you to consider the issues/conflicts/values of Early America Puritan traditions. 1.Discuss the issues of identity and conformity within the Puritan tradition and how it is revealed in early American literature. Questions to consider in your response: - How can differing views within a community challenge conformity? - How does one build an identity when conformity is expected? - What are the consequences of not conforming? Resources/Text to Consider:  The Crucible by Arthur Miller  “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” – Jonathan Edwards

5 Form Requirement -Your essay must have a clear thesis that responds to the prompt and presents an original claim. -Your essay must be at least five paragraphs in length and must be organized using MELEL-CON, ACTS, and STAC -Your essay must be typed, double spaced, with one-inch margins, in size 12, Times New Roman font. (No handwritten essays accepted) -Your essay must include in-text parenthetical citations and a works cited page, according to MLA guidelines.

6 Guidelines/Goals An argumentative essay provides your point of view or position on an issue. Think of your paper as the fulfillment of the following goals: In your essay you will… Communicate what you have learned about Early American values and Ideals from The Crucible and “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Demonstrate your own interpretation of “What it means to be an American?” and illustrate how the various texts you have read over the course of the unit connect to this idea Present a thesis that provides a clear and arguable claim, unique to your own reading experience. Provide meaningful and relevant support for your claim, using both paraphrased and directly quoted evidence from a variety of course readings. Maintain academic and persuasive tone and language that gives your argument credibility.
