Leadership Love Stories Robson Marinho, Ph.D. Andrews University

What does leadership have to do with love? Nothing or everything?

What happened to your life when you were in love for the first time?

Love is the most powerful force in the world for making changes...... and most people and organizations did not discover that yet!... and most people and organizations did not discover that yet!

True or False: The success of a leader is proportional to his or her love for the followers.

True or False: No change of major positive impact in the world was made without a loving servant-leader

Who had more power?

Who had more leadership?

Gandhi changed the history of India because he loved his followers

Gandhi policy was: passive resistance to, and non-cooperation with discrimination

The world is full of pretense leaders. What made Gandhi a different type of leader? Money? Position? Prestige? What?

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; love is the prerogative of the brave

Hatred ever kills, love never dies; such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela changed the history of South Africa because he loved the victms of Apartheid

Money? Position? Prestige? What? What made Mandela a different type of leader?

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. If [people] can learn to hate they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

" I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands."

" In my country we go to prison first, and then become President."

Mother Theresa Mother Theresa changed the history of social work in the world because she loved the poorest people of India

In 1950, she founded a religious order in Calcutta called the Missionaries of Charity. The order provides food and operates hospitals, schools, orphanages, youth centers, and shelters for lepers and the dying poor. It now has branches in 50 Indian cities and more than 40 countries.

Why did she do that?

"We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love."

"There is more hunger in the world for love and appreciation than for bread."

"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier."

"Love is repaid by love alone!"

"It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving."

"People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you may win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People who really want help may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway. Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt. Give the world your best anyway."

Jesus Christ changed the history of humankind because of his love for every single human being

Why did he do that?

“He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.” John 13:1

“Love one another.”
