DRAWING CONCLUSIONS The Process and Application

Drawing Conclusions  Objective: You will be able to draw conclusions by observing pictures, considering the action in each picture, and telling your conclusion.

The Process  1. Observe / Read  2. Consider the action in the picture/text.  3. Like a doctor making a diagnosis for a patient, drawing conclusions involves considering the facts and actions to make an observation, a statement which is factual about the picture or text. This statement is known as a conclusion and comes at the end of the observation or considering of the facts.

Drawing Conclusions from Reading  Winter Holiday Cards  Every December, families and friends get together to celebrate a variety of holidays. Although religions and traditions differ, everyone can participate in certain fun activities. One of those activities is creating winter holiday cards to send to relatives that live far away or even down the street. Jack's teacher helps him and his classmates make them during art class.  The first step, Jack's teacher says, is to make a list of who he wants to send a card to so that he can determine how many he should make. Once he's decided on his grandma, cousin and pen pal, his teacher assists him with cutting out colored construction paper and writing their names with a short message. 2  When Jack has the cards cut out and addressed, it's time for the fun part: decorating! The teacher provided buckets of markers, tubes of glitter glue in every color and winter-themed foam cutouts.  Jack decides to draw him and his brother, Bobby, having a snowball fight next to a snowman. He uses silver glitter for the snow and creates a purple foam snowman! Jack is proud of his winter holiday cards and can't wait to send them to his friends and family. After school, his mom helps him put them in envelopes and in the mailbox.

Passage vs. Section  From the previous slide, identify the passage numbered 2. Given the information of the passage, what conclusions can you draw about the need for a “short message” written on the cards?  From the previous slide, what conclusions can you draw about the perceived feelings relating to the entire passage and the creativity of the scene?

Drawing Conclusions with Selected Responses   Doctor Forester had been working on the contraption for several years. It was finally complete and the unveiling ceremony was scheduled later that evening. His fellow scientists had always teased Doctor Forester who had little success with previous inventions. He was always forgetting to turn switches or make the correct calibrations that would allow his devices to shine. He was sure today would be different though. At the ceremony, Doctor Forester removed the large sheet covering the large machine. He walked over to the device and pushed the ‘on’ button. Nothing happened. He walked around to the back of the contraption and noticed an empty wall socket. When Doctor Forester returned from behind the machine, he gently hit the ‘on’ button. Suddenly all the lights and machinery turned on. Doctor Forester smiled.  Why did Doctor Forester’s device not turn on?  he didn’t hit the on button hard enough  the machine needed a few minutes to warm up  the machine was broken and he went around to the back to fix it  Doctor Forester had forgotten to plug it in   What conclusions can be made about Doctor Forester from the passage?  he is very absent-minded and forgetful  Doctor Forester is a genius  one of the other scientists tried to sabotage Doctor Forester by unplugging his machine  Doctor Forrester’s device was a huge success
