European organizations: ORFEUS ORFEUS, founded in 1987, is the non-profit foundation that aims at co-ordination and promoting digital, broadband (BB) seismology in the European-Mediterranean area. Pragmatics, ORFEUS priorities: -Gathering and archiving waveform data for and from observatories and making this available to the research community -Coordination actions (workshops, meetings, web site, newsletter, documentation, information, facilitating software access, inventories, etc.) -Pursuing international funding, specifically EC projects (currently in coordination with EMSC) Consequence, ORFEUS ExeCom and participants represents and serves largely the research community.

European organizations: EMSC Pragmatics; EMSC priorities: -Gathering and combining parameter data from observatories and making this (rapidly) available to the European- Mediterranean community. -Providing a European-Mediterranean earthquake information service. -Pursuing international funding (in coordination with ORFEUS). Consequence: EMSC General Assembly largely consists of the European- Mediterranean observatory community EMSC serves both the observatory community, the general public and disaster management community.

Euro-Med Seismological Centre: EMSC Non-profit NGO created by ESC in 1975 to rapidly locate earthquakes Created, funded and governed by the seismological community 76 institutes in 49 countries as members in 2007 + 5 pending applications in 2008 Main Activities: –Earthquake Alert and Rapid Earthquake Information; –Euro-Med Bull; –Improve collaboration with Northern Africa & Middle East –Participation in international initiatives: GEO, GMES

Alert Service and Rapid Earthquake Info (REI) Composite services based on the integration of data from 61 networks (44 countries) and 1,850 stations worldwide Alert Service (operational support from LDG and IGN): –Deals with potentially damaging events (M>5 Euro-Med, M>6 Continental Asia, M>7 worldwide) –Manually reviewed info rapidly disseminated (fax, SMS, email) REI for all earthquakes –information available on the web site (+ RSS, WAP, I-Mode) –Manually reviewed during working hours 2007: –16 000 located events –180 events by the Alert service 1,500 Euro-Med contributing stations

Evolutions des performances 2004-2007 Nb messages - Nb stations Euro-Med Worldwide events ; Euro-Med Events Unique daily visitors – ENS users Dissemination time ; triggering time

Seismograph stations in Europe Short period and Broadband

Virtual European Broadband Seismic Network The VEBSN concept The VEBSN: consists of a pool of broadband seismograph stations, the data of which is shared in (near) real-time by European seismological observatories. data is shared on the basis of the VEBSN statement of operation. is the efficient vehicle to gather and archive data for scientific research. data backup is secured in the European Integrated Data Archive, pragmatically the European regional FDSN archive.

Exchange of waveform data in the European-Mediterranean area Some on-going discussions: interests networks  research communities Real-time data exchange Required for quick locations, tsunami warning NEAMTWS, shakemaps, etc. Network sensitivities: finances and public information Minor modification of ‘Statement of Operation’ discussed [Italy – Greece] Near real-time data exchange (Only) efficient way for long-term data archiving for research purposes Research priorities: unified easy access Currently, most networks agree, occasionally delay’s are discussed Research community Requests all data and all in real-time. Notably IRIS policy! Can contribute with ‘added value’ tools for improvement of network performance. (rapid magnitude, Moment tensors, shakemaps, location, …) Network interests + research results  improved network performance.
