Introduction Real Life is about sacrifice, serving, selflessness and sharing.

When it comes to life, we don’t want anyone telling us how to live, we just go out there and start living – making it up as we go. We have a manual, a book of directions – it’s the Bible. We should read it, understand it, live by it.

A Quick Start Guide to Christian Living is found in Romans, Chapter 12. Here we find the basic elements to help us live the Christian life – to see what’s expected of us.

This little quick start guide covers three areas of life:

1.Our Relationship with the Father Live a Worshipful Life dedicated to the Father

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 (ESV)

So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Romans 12:1 (MSG)

2. Our Relationship with Ourselves Live a Transformed Life to find Real Purpose

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 (ESV)

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. Romans 12:3 (ESV)

Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:49 (ESV)

3. Our Relationship with Others Live a Shared Life to benefit the Covenant Community

For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Romans 12:4-5 (ESV)

All have a function in the body of Christ.

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8 (ESV)

Live a Sincere Life in a world of selfishness

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Romans 12:9 (ESV)

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Romans 12:10 (ESV)

Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Romans 12:11 (ESV)

Live a Giving Life in the presence of conflict

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Romans 12:12-13 (ESV)

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Romans 12:14 (ESV)

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 (ESV)

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. Romans 12:16 (ESV)

Live a Pure Life in the face of Evil

Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12:17-18 (ESV)

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." 20 To the contrary, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head." Romans 12:19-20 (ESV)

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21 (ESV)

Conclusion We need to find ways to show kindness, consideration, and love – to show people that God really does love them and accepts them through His Son.

Two Things About Worship

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Romans 12:1 (NLT)

It is more than just what we do here on Sundays – we should live a worship life. Our worship corporately as a body should be “informed.

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47 (NLT)

We were created for community. The journey of life and faith is often trying, difficult and painful.

So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Ephesians 2:19 (NLT)

In Christ we are a community of faith, a special place where we can minister and be ministered to. We need each other. Therefore, the community of faith needs to be a priority in our lives.

O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There's light for a look at the Savior, And life more abundant and free! Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace. 320 “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”

Thro’ death into life everlasting He passed, and we follow Him there; Over us sin no more hath dominion--- For more than conquerors we are! Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace. “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”

His word shall not fail you--- He promised; Believe Him, and all will be well: Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell! Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace. “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”

Benediction
