2 PHASE 1 WAS INITIATED WITH THE ADOPTION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN BY THE FIRST NETWORK MEETING HELD IN FEBRUARY 1999. PHASE 1 WAS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NETWORK ORGANIZATIONS TO IMPLEMENT THE DECLARATION AND COMPILATION OF BASELINE INFORMATION ON AIR QUALITY MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT IN THE PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES. National Stakeholders Forum – Sri Lanka – 12 th June 2007

3 BASELINE STUDIES PROVIDED VALUABLE INFORMATION ON TACKLING THE TRANSBOUNDARY AIR POLLUTION IN THE PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES AND CLEARY IDENTIFIED THE GAPS IN THE EXISTING MONITORING SYSTEM. ALSO THE ACTION PLANS PREPARED BY THE PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES PROVIDED THE NATIONAL PRIORITIES IN IMPLEMENTING THE MALE DECLARATION. PHASE 1 OUTPUTS WERE REVIEWED AND ADOPTED AT THE SECOND MEETING OF NETWORK HELD IN MARCH 2000, KATHMANDU, NEPAL. National Stakeholders Forum – Sri Lanka – 12 th June 2007

4 Monitoring Activities Under Malé Declaration Phase II MoU signed- End of May, 2002MoU signed- End of May, 2002 In-country training & Equipment Received End of June, 2003In-country training & Equipment Received End of June, 2003 CEA started monitoring of Sulphure Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide at the selected monitoring site at Dutuwewa, Galenbindunuwewa in August 2003CEA started monitoring of Sulphure Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide at the selected monitoring site at Dutuwewa, Galenbindunuwewa in August 2003 Wet Deposition monitoring started in the latter part of November 2003.Wet Deposition monitoring started in the latter part of November 2003. 25 Problems Encountered ; Non durability of plastic material of the lid and the funnel holder of the wet only collector and funnel of bulk collector in Sri Lanka’s climatic condition, mainly due to hot sunshine, the material became brittle. Need spare lids at least one for every 06 months However we have managed with a local plastic plate National Stakeholders Forum – Sri Lanka – 12 th June 2007
