3 Indian Ocean Where are we now? A single system being planned All countries of the Indian Ocean participate Tsunami advisory information provided from centres in Hawaii and Tokyo. National focal points designated in 25 nations Governance of UN/IOC to be accepted in Paris Full scope of the task recognized: multi-nation (28), multi-year (>3) Beyond the emergency: transition to reconstruction and development phase. Joint UN implementation: IOC, WMO, ISDR, UNDP, UN-ESCAP

6 6/21 Tokyo & Hawaii Study Tours for high level administrators that are responsible for tsunami warning activities in Indian Ocean rim countries to acquire, through the comparison of different types of systems in Hawaii and Japan, the necessary judgment and methods of assessment to identify the components of the national tsunami warning and mitigation system that need to be built or strengthened Example Hawaii: 20 countries, 50 participants

Sea level data collection and exchange, including deep-ocean tsunami detection instruments, evaluation for operational warning 3. Tsunami hazard identification and characterisation, including modelling, prediction and scenario development system 4. Establishment of a system of interoperable operational centres.
