LAB EQUIPMENT AND THEIR USES 2009| Winkler| AAS

INTRODUCTION: You will need to know these items by sight and be able to provide the proper use for each. As a tool to help you study, I have put together a photo collection of the items you will need to know. The equipment reviewed in this PowerPoint will be used for the remainder of the year.

GRADUATED CYLINDER Measures liquids (between 1ml-500ml) Measures volume

BEAKER Measures liquids (not as accurate as graduated cylinder) container for liquids Used for heating and viewing

BEAKER TONGS: Beaker tongs are used to hold and move beakers containing hot liquids.

ERLENMEYER FLASKS hold and/or heat solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction, or that are likely to splatter if stirred.

TEST TUBES: Test tubes are used to mix chemicals and also used to heat chemicals in.

TEST TUBE RACK: Test tube racks are for holding, drying, and organizing test tubes in a vertical position, and are located in the side wall cabinets.

TEST TUBE HOLDER: A test tube holder is useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle with your hands.

TEST TUBE BRUSH: Test tube brushes are used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders.

FUNNEL: A funnel is used to: 1) aid in the transfer of liquids from one vessel to another, and 2) Hold filter paper while filtering.

STOPPER: Rubber and cork stoppers are used to close test tubes and flasks, thus avoiding spillage or contamination.

STIRRING ROD: The stirring rod will: a) manually stir solutions; b) assist in pouring liquids; and c) transfer a single drop of a solution to test papers (like litmus)

WEIGHING BOATS: Weighing boats are used for holding and determining the mass of solid chemicals. Never put chemicals directly on the balance scale – they will leave a contaminating residue.

SCOOPULAS: Scoopulas are used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers.

BURNERS: Burners are used for the heating of nonflammable liquids and solids.

RING STANDS: Ring stands are a safe and convenient way to support equipment holding reactions that require heating using a lab burner. The base can also be used as an insulating pad to place hot objects on while they cool.

RING CLAMPS: Ring clamps connect to a ring stand, and when used with a wire gauze provide a stable, elevated platform for a beaker to rest when heated.

TEST TUBE CLAMPS: Test tube clamps are used to secure test tubes to the ring stand.

TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE: Used for measuring mass

MORTAR AND PESTLE: Used for grinding substances

THERMOMETER: Used to measure temperature

GOGGLES: Protects your eyes
