3. Orthopedic Kinesiotaping Saturday November 1, 2014 Learn the fundamental concepts of kinesiotaping and the unique properties of Kinesio Tex Tape. Lab sessions will provide time to practice applying tape to relax overuse syndromes, stimulate weak muscles and decrease pain and swelling. The Six Corrective Techniques (Mechanical, Functional Space, Fascia, Ligament/Tendon and Lymphatic) and their application to a variety of UE, LE and Spine conditions will be presented. Location: RIM Main Campus-Brasza Center 261 Mack Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48201 Instructors: Lindsey Ireland, PT, DPT, CKTP, Physical Therapist, RIM treats patients with orthopedic injuries at RIM Brasza and is a therapist on the Return to Work team. She is a Certified Kinesiotaping Practitioner. Jennifer Bassett-Payne, MS, ATC, is an Athletic Trainer at RIM Brasza working with patients with orthopedic and sports medicine injuries. Her previous experience includes working with high school and college athletes. While completing her Masters at Oakland University, her thesis requirement was met with a research paper titled, "Benefits of Kinesiotaping in a Therapeutic Setting." Traumatic Brain Injury: Inpatient Rehabilitation Basics and Beyond Wednesday November 5, 2014 Participants will receive an overview of evidence based literature and medical considerations for the inpatient rehabilitation of patients after TBI. A practical patient case approach will allow immediate application to enhance treatment progression while maximizing safety. Katie actively treats patients in the inpatient neurological setting. Katie teaches the spinal cord injury curriculum at Wayne State’s doctorate physical therapy program and is active in clinical education. She was a recipient of the clinical instructor of the year award by the Wayne State University in 2006. 5. Adapted Sports Friday November 14, 2014 This course will introduce clinicians to a variety of adaptive sports including hand cycling, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. Coaches and instructors will describe the sports and methods to encourage participation by both beginner and elite athletes. Course participants will learn about equipment and rules for each sport through lecture, discussion and hands-on activity. Resource information will also be provided. Massage and Rehabilitation Saturday December 6, 2014 Soft tissue techniques can aide in the reduction of pain, edema, muscle hypertension, fascial restrictions, and increase ROM, circulation, mobility, and flexibility. Basic soft tissue assessment will be discussed through the class. Direct skin contact as well as non skin contact techniques will be demonstrated. This class will be 90% hands on and will address techniques for various areas of the body including gluteals and legs, cervical and shoulders, paraspinals and pects, feet and scalp. Participants with be practicing on each other. Please wear light weight clothes and bring a pair of shorts. Be prepared to undress from the waist up to practice certain techniques. 7. Gross Human Anatomy of the Upper and Lower Quandrants Saturday January 31 and Sunday February 1, 2015 As of October 8, the Upper Quadrant course is full The goal of this course it to provide rehabilitation clinicians with a solid anatomical understanding of the upper and lower quadrant musculoskeletal features with a emphasis on learning from cadavers via prosections and participant dissection. Traditional lecture presentations with course packets will be provided for all attendees. Interactive lecture and lab activities will engage students to deepen their understanding of the function and form of anatomy. A Certificate of Completion and a DVD of anatomical videos and other related resources will be provided at the end of the program. On Saturday January 31 the focus will be Anatomy of the Pectoral Region, Back, Shoulder, Neck and Arm. The focus on Sunday February 1 will be the Gluteal, Lateral rotators; Hip, Thigh and Lower Limb. This is an active participation, interactive gross anatomy cadaver lab. All equipment, cadavers, prosections, and lab supplies will be provided. Registrants can attend one or two days. 9. The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education (CE) for Athletic Trainers (ATs). The 2014 programs have been approved for the number of Category A CE hours noted in the course descriptions. ATs are responsible for claiming only those hours actually spent participating in the CE activity. According to the education levels described by the CEC Committee of the NATA these continuing education courses are considered to be Essential Level.
