habitat is an ecological or environmental area that is inhabited by a particular species of animal, plant, or other type of organism. [1][2] It is the natural environment in which an organism lives, or the physical environment that surrounds a species population. [3]

The critically endangered North Atlantic right whale is one of the rarest whale species in the world. Once heavily hunted, the North Atlantic right whale has not recovered from the pressure of historic whaling. Around 500 of these whales remain. Vulnerable to vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear, this species suffers mortality from human activities. Its recovery is threatened by low reproduction, habitat loss, disease and environmental contaminants. Solutions to reduce human impact on right whales exist, but implementation remains a challenge

Found only in New Zealand waters, Hector's dolphins are some of the smallest and rarest dolphins in the world. This small, strikingly colored and very social dolphin is threatened by human activities and is prone to becoming tangled in gillnets and drowning. Through our research, we help guide policymakers as they develop conservation strategies to preserve these endangered animals and educate the public about this rare and special dolphin.

In biology, an adaptation, also called an adaptive trait, is a trait with a current functional role in the life history of an organism that is maintained and evolved by means of natural selection. Adaptation refers to both the current state of being adapted and to the dynamic evolutionary process that leads to the adaptation. Adaptations contribute to the fitness and survival of individuals. Organisms face a succession of environmental challenges as they grow and develop and are equipped with an adaptive plasticity as the phenotype of traits develop in response to the imposed conditions. The developmental norm of reaction for any given trait is essential to the correction of adaptation as it affords a kind of biological insurance or resilience to varying environments.traitevolvednatural selectionfitnessplasticityphenotypedevelopmentalnorm of reaction

Polar bears are strong swimmers; they swim across bays or wide leads without hesitation. They can swim for several hours at a time over long distances. They've been tracked swimming continuously for 100 km (62 mi.). A polar bear's front paws propel them through the water dog-paddle style. The hind feet and legs are held flat and are used as rudders. A thick layer of blubber (fat), up to 11 cm (4.3 in.) thick, keeps the polar bear warm while swimming in cold water. Polar bears can obtain a swimming speed of 10 kph (6.2 mph). A polar bear's nostrils close when under water.

Lions live in prides of 2-40 members; the average group has 13 members. The species breeds year-round. Males compete fiercely for the ability to breed with prides of females. Young males often band together to gain control of a pride, with stronger males forcing weaker ones out in battles that can end in the death of the loser. The females of a pride often give birth in close proximity and can help one another care for their cubs. Cubs are kept in hiding for the first eight weeks of their lives and remain dependent on adults until they are 16 months of age. Females remain in their pride upon reaching maturity, while males leave the group at 2.5 years, living nomadically for a time before seeking to take over their own pride.
