2 Curriculum to support Active Citizenship Finnish Adult Education Association FAEA 2 The objectives of a course on active citizenship increase citizens` social participation increase social cohesion in society strengthen the community-based activities diversify the concept of active citizenship strengthen democracy and civil society support lifelong and lifewide learning In order to perform as an active citizen it is necessary to determine one`s values, and to recognize them and to know how to communicate and have a dialogue live together negotiate take part in a public conversation tell the differences use information and communication technology Other key competences: Critical mind and thinking, Analytical thinking, Participation, Skills to cope with conflicts, Skills for argumentation

3 Curriculum to support Active Citizenship Finnish Adult Education Association FAEA 3 STRUCTURE OF THE CURRICULUM FOR ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP The curriculum covers five (5) study units. One (1) study unit equals 40 hours of working. The curriculum has four (4) main modules: 1Me as a citizen (1 study unit) 2Me as an active learner (2-5 study units) 3Me as an active citizen (1 study unit) 4My personal curriculum plan/ Our group`s curriculum plan & self-assessment

4 Curriculum to support Active Citizenship Finnish Adult Education Association FAEA 4 The recognition of prior and informal learning The participant can include into the study entity prior and informal learning as follows: 1)in the module Me as an active learner: prior studies on the chosen themes not older than 5 years participant must have a diploma or certificate, 2) in the module Me as an active citizen: prior social/communal/cultural activities not older than 5 years participant must have a report signed by the representative of the organisation in question

5 Curriculum to support Active Citizenship Finnish Adult Education Association FAEA 5 The recognition of prior and informal learning 3) In the module My personal curriculum plan /Our group´s curriculum plan & self assessment: The participant assesses the learning process him/herself, with the study group and the tutor. The prior learning is taken into account. The outcomes of learning are compared with the agreed study aims and objectives.

6 Curriculum to support Active Citizenship Finnish Adult Education Association FAEA 6 Case KSL: PORTFOLIO (in the framework of the curriculum to support Active Citizenship based on the recommendation) as a means of analysing skills and competences obtained as a trade union/political party activist My Personal History as an Activist to demonstrate ones competences in several ways chronological/thematic SWOT-analysis and personal study plan attached used for job application, self-confidence, sharing

7 Curriculum to support Active Citizenship Finnish Adult Education Association FAEA 7 Case KSL: PORTFOLIO My Personal History as an Activist Some of the questions asked: What is the most important thing in the world for me and how do I get it? How do I participate/influence? How do I learn? What do I know (to do) and never learned at school? How is a strike operated: what skills and knowledge is needed? Where and how did I learn these things? What are the skills and knowledge that have to be turned over to the next generation?
