1 The English Revolution or English Civil War

2 Stats on England Constitutional Monarchy
Charles I has been king since 1625. He believes in the “divine right of kings”. This means he believes God had made someone a king and God can not be wrong and therefore neither could anyone appointed by him to rule a nation be wrong.

3 The King vs Parliament The king believed he had absolute authority
Parliament was used to exercising its rights in the name of the English people The two began to clash…

4 I need money!! Whenever the kings needed money they would raise taxes. If parliament would not let them the king would shut down parliament. King James I did this for 10 years!

5 I need more money!! Basically acting like babies!  Charles I (King James son) now needed money and called parliament into session. Parliament agreed to get him money if he agreed to the Petition of Right (adding to basic rights of the English people and parliament alone had the right to impose taxes.) He agreed and dismissed Parliament (for 11 years!!)

6 Puritans Charles I was an enemy of the Puritans.
Many Puritans were members in the House of Commons in Parliament and opposed King Charles I. In 1640, Charles needed money for war and called Parliament into session. Before giving him money he had to pass a law that said he could not dismiss Parliament without their say. He agreed. But later tried to attack the Puritans in Parliament. WAR BROKE OUT!

7 Oliver Cromwell Leader of the Puritans
Supporters known as the Roundheads His men defeated Charles’s Cavaliers and Charles was beheaded. Cromwell seized power of the government.

8 Under Cromwell Control
New Parliament ended the monarchy and declared England a republic. Within 3 years he could not control the government and set up a military dictatorship. He tried to turn England into a strict Puritan nation.

9 The Glorious Revolution
Cromwell died in 1658. Parliament asks Charles’ son to return as King Charles II. This is known as the Restoration because the monarchy is brought back. The Church of England is also restored as the official religion.

10 English Bill of Rights NOT
This was signed by King William and Queen Mary It essentially stated that the monarch ruled by the power of parliament, not God. NOT

12 How does it connect to the Enlightenment?!
Below is part of the English Bill of Rights, on your LEFT side page explain which Enlightenment thinkers influenced this document AND how they did so. “…That the freedom of speech and debates or proceedings in Parliament ought not to be impeached or questioned…” “…in order to such an establishment as that their religion, laws, and liberties might not again be in danger…”
