21 Cahokia: Leading site of the Mississippian culture. Led by priest-rulers who regulated farming activities. The heart of the community was a flat topped mound with a wooden temple on top. Mississippi and Ohio river provided easy transportation. Traded with groups from the West. We know this because they found items in their burial chambers. 1000 A.D. -1200 A.D. As many as 30,000 people lived in Cahokia.
