2 2 Spring VON 2001 © 2001, Cisco Systems, Inc. Session 32 – 4G Wireless: Future of VoIP Michael Ramalho (Cisco Systems): – Session introduction and facilitator – 4G Wireless Implies: and VoIP IP (and VoIP) to the mobile endpoint Seamless handoff for real-time IP streams across heterogeneous (wireless) access technologies. Mauricio Arango (Sun Microsystems): – Unique Aspects of 4G/Application Architecture/API efforts/ … Walled-garden vs. bazaar/Impact of wireless LANs on 4G Phil Neumiller (3Com Corp, a.k.a. “Mobility Zealot at Large”): – Overcoming 3G & legacy cellular/Spectrum allocation madness/… 3G stuff to carry to 4G / 4G Network & technology opportunities Dana Blair (Cisco Systems): – 4G: “The end of the Intelligent (services) Network” Question and Answer Panel 4G Wireless: Future of VoIP Session Outline

3 3 Spring VON 2001 © 2001, Cisco Systems, Inc. Session 32 – 4G Wireless: Future of VoIP PRESENT – Seamless handoffs can be designed for homogeneous networks – usually with limited participation of the mobile node (MN) in the decision. FUTURE – For IP to mobile node (MN) applications where there is a multiplicity of potential (wireless) access technologies: –What functionality is required in the MN and Access Router (AR) to facilitate seamless transfer (network or MN initiated)? –What QoS, AAA, Security infrastructure changes are needed? CHALLENGE – How do we help facilitate the future vision during transition from 3G and legacy cellular? ASSUMPTIONS: – Base IPv6 spec has fundamental mobile IP functionality – Multiplicity of (wireless) access technologies exist in a particular geography 4G Wireless: Future of VoIP Seamless Handoff Across Heterogeneous Networks

9 9 Spring VON 2001 © 2001, Cisco Systems, Inc. Session 32 – 4G Wireless: Future of VoIP A multiplicity of wireless access technologies exist in a particular geography Handoffs of real-time IP streams are independent of access technology! Corollary: Service provider is not “locked-in” to a particular access technology! Off-load of expensive spectrum with lower cost access technologies (802.11/unlicensed spectrum) Business models that exploit 4G technologies yet to be derived (exploit statistical characteristics of mobility) 4G VoIP Technology - Opportunities/Threats

Session 32 – 4G Wireless: Future of VoIP Work begun in IETF in Seamoby and Mobile IP Working Groups. – draft-blair-rt-mobileipv6-seamoby-00.txt Many companies are working on architectures and prototype hardware to demonstrate feasibility and to determine seamlessness performance in cross-technology handoff cases.
