4 Grading Policy :  Participation: 10% - I expect you to engage in classroom discussions and activities, as well as helping your group members answer in class questions and assignments. Sleeping in class, talking with your classmates when not permitted, or any form of destructive behavior will result in a lower grade.  Exams: 30% - There will be two exams: A midterm and a final (each worth 15%). The final will be cumulative with more emphasis on the second half of the summer’s material.

5  Labs: 15% - There will be 3 labs throughout the summer. I will grade you on your ability to carry out the lab procedure (Safety, Behavior, Preparation, etc.)  Homework: 25% - All homework assignments will be given specific due dates. For each day that the assignment is late, you will lose 10% of the assignment’s grade.  Quizzes: 15% - Before the class lecture begins, there will be a small quiz consisting of a couple questions that cover the material from the previous class. These will be quick assessments of your effort.

7 Other : - No food or drink in labs - No cell phones in labs *** Come to class prepared! - Print out powerpoint slides before class. - Make sure you have reviewed the previous material. - Be ready to learn Chemistry!

8 What is Chemistry???  The science that deals with the composition and properties of substances and various elementary forms of matter.  Basically, the study of matter and its properties.

9 What do Chemists do?  Study subatomic particles for research or even philosophical reasons.  Study the reactions and synthesis of different compounds.  Study how the chemicals in the atmosphere are affecting our daily lives.  Find ways to better our daily lives in general!

10  There are many units, but you will only have to know the following. Mass = Grams (g) Volume = Liters (L) Amount = Moles (mol) Length = Meters (m) Temperature = Kelvin (K)

11  Conversions are arguably the most difficult concept in beginner’s Chemistry.  We are going to learn basic conversions, but keep in mind that you will come across more complex conversions later.  So master them now!  Conversions can be used to change the scale of a base unit or to change between types of units.

12  Steps: 1. Position units in a way so that everything is cancelled except the unit you want to end with. 2. Visualize which units are smaller and larger. 3. Figure out ratios and plug the numbers in. 4. Plug in starting amount and calculate.

14  Let’s convert 10 grams to milligrams. Step 1: Units grams x milligrams grams grams x milligrams grams

15  Step 2: Visualize Using the Life Saver Sheet, we can determine that there are.001 (1x10 -3 ) grams in 1 milligram. This is equal to 1000 (1x10 3 )milligrams in 1 gram. Since 1 milligram equals a fraction of a gram… which one is bigger? Grams!!!

16  Step 3: Ratios grams x 1 milligram.001 grams (1x10 -3 ) OR grams x 1000 milligrams (1x10 3 ) 1 gram

17 Step 4: Calculate 10 g x 1 mg = 10,000 mg.001 g (1x10 -3 ) 10 g x 1000 mg (1x10 3 ) = 10,000 mg 1 g

18  Now, try to convert 300 Megagrams to kilograms. 300 Mg x 1x10 6 g x 1 kg = 1 Mg 1x10 3 g 300,000 g
