1 From Tuned Out to Zuned In: A Promising Intervention for Exceptional Learners 2008 Microsoft Canadian Innovative Teachers Project, semi- finalists at the Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Teachers’ Forum in Hong Kong

2 Background to the Project Demonstrated need at our school Students with exceptionalities: autism, reading disabilities, cognitive impairments, ADHD, as well as gifted/talented students Problems with traditional interventions Shift in resource model

3 What is a Zune player? Features Music, videos, images, and audiobooks Cost Can I use any mp3 player? iPod voice feature mp3 players versus laptops/workstations

4 How can an mp3 player assist and enable learners? Audio/video files to develop functional numeracy and literacy skills as well as life, social, and communication skills Audiobooks Recorded classroom lessons for review and practice Curricular content to support inclusion Music or “white noise” to promote focusing and minimize distractions Telescoping or extending the curricula for gifted/talented learners Can play a role with all learners

9 Techie Stuff Video files need to be converted to mp4 format (often you will receive them in flash video files or windows media videos) Audio files need to be converted to mp3 format (often you will receive them in WAV files) PowerPoint presentations can be created, and then narrated and recorded using the Smart Notebook recording feature.
