2 Instructions Study the first chapter. You may use the power point provided but do ensure that you understood the chapter thoroughly. Answer the questions on chapter one Then recheck the answers Do the same for each chapter in each book Complicated questions maybe addressed to the tutor

3 Rules per student All (new/old) ideas must have an authentic reference to support it (Quran/ hadith) Opinions of scholars remain opinions but assists in our knowledge All opinions must be linked to Quran and sunnah Mazhab facilitates the understanding of the Quran and sunnah

4 Fiqh What is the meaning of Fiqh? Fiqh means `understanding` Two kinds of science; Rational (intellect) Revelational-(wahy)- Ibn Khaldun. It excludes intellect as far as reception, reporting and transmission. This relates to primary import.

5 Three-step approach. Fiqh relates to secondary import and requires analogical reasoning. Three- step approach- Quran - Sunnah- Qiyaas – Muaz bin Jabal to Madinah Quran - Sunnah- Qiyaas – Muaz bin Jabal to Madinah

6 Opinions How can two contradicting opinions be right? Eg. Punish Banu Quraizah for breaching their agreement. `Those of you who believe in Allah and the Day Hereafter they should offer salatul Asr after reaching Banu Quraizah.` `And be not like those who separated and disputed after clear proofs came to them. For such there is an awful doom.`3:105
