10. Prophecy
"I see little joy,  and much sorrow. I see fire and death and pain.  I see you betrayed by almost everyone you have ever trusted."      "Almost everyone?"      "Your greatest enemy is also your greatest friend, and  the trust you place in him is rewarded at the end of days.  He is your freedom, and you are his.  And in the end... In the end, you die in the arms of your friend, and he dies in yours, that a world might live. I see ... Shadows. It is hard for me to see what sort of shadows, or what throws them, but I see  pieces of shadows all over the palace, and beneath it, gradually spreading across our world.  They are the ones who will bring the fire. They are the ones who will bring the pain. I do not know who they are, I know only  that that they are.  And that they are here.”

Thank you. There is no gift that I can give you that would be the equal of the one you have  given me: my freedom, and the restoration of my father's House. So I give you the only thing I have to give, the  last prophecy I intend to make.      One day, Emperor, you will be free of your burden.  One day you will save our people, and all the sacrifices you make will not have been in vain.

"I am this world," the elder said.      "Not possible," G'Kar said.  "Planets are not sentient creatures."      "No? Perhaps not the soil, or the metal, or their component molecules, but what of the lifeforms themselves?  Branch and leaf, hoof and claw?      "There is no memory among us, even the oldest, that tells us how it happened.  Some who came here long ago and discovered our nature had their own ideas about it.  They believed that in a time long past, links began to occur between all the forms of life here.  Telesymbiosis, they called it.  Individually, none of those who live in this place are sentient, as you mean it.  But collectively, there is a group mind, a flash of consciousness that links all forms of life here into one great entity that, one day, long ago… woke up.      "Ours is a world of unrivaled peace and cooperation.  The flower tells the insect when it is most suited for pollination; the wounded animal calls out to the carrion eaters when it is about to die so that the food is not wasted.  We are one.

She knelt, dug her fingers into the dirt, and pierced the hard ground with her thoughts.  She was sweating, shaking, but refused to pass out.  Break the neural link, overload the faux-synaptic pathways, neutralize the electro-chemical transmissions, break, overload, neutralize, break, overload, neutralize…      Far below, something massive and moist began to tear.      Blackness surged upward, rising behind her eyes.      In her mind, a planet screamed.

19. Beginning
Much to his own surprise, Marcus Cole breathed deeply. His first conscious thought was I'm alive, followed closely by Why am I alive? He blinked open his eyes. Bright white light stabbed at him, and he closed them again. "Dim the lights," someone said. He tried a second time, and managed to keep his eyes open. He was in an operating theater, of that much he was certain. Several Minbari doctors stood over him. At least one of them wore the cloak and pin that identified him as a Ranger, same as Marcus, serving in the shadows, serving the Alliance.
