2 Program Training and Consultation Centre Who are we? Established in 2000 under Ontario Tobacco Strategy Based on American Stop Smoking Intervention Study(ASSIST) o ASSIST used media strategically to advocate for tobacco prevention and control policies in US Similar model was implemented in Ontario to pass smoke-free public place by-laws In 2010, the Media Network launched a new service supporting the areas Healthy Eating and Active Living (MN HEAL) 2

4 Program Training and Consultation Centre What do we do? We offer capacity building support through consultations, training workshops and webinars, and other resources related to media advocacy*. Our mandate is to provide free resources to the Public Health Units of Ontario to support healthy public policy change at the community level. 4

5 Program Training and Consultation Centre What do we do? …some definitions… *Media advocacy refers to the strategic use of media by those seeking to advance a social or public policy initiative. Social marketing is the use of media to promote individual attitude and behaviour change. Social marketing and media advocacy have differently defined goals and while these strategies can be complimentary, they can also sometimes be in contradiction with each other. 5
