Page 1 BUS TEST FLEETS Capital Program Oversight Committee March, 2011 Department of Buses
Page 2 Goals Test different fleets of buses to create competition for new bus purchases in order to deliver better performing buses at the lowest cost. Key test program criterion include: u Reliability u Fuel economy u Maintainability u Vendor support u Production timeliness & quality
Page 3 Implementation Procure seven test fleets of 90 buses each: u Three different fleets of standard diesel buses. u Two different fleets of artic buses. u One fleet of express buses. u One fleet of turbine buses as an alternative propulsion system by a new manufacturer.
Page 4 Status Standard Diesel Buses Nova u This project was awarded in December, 2010. u The first bus will be delivered in March, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by June, 2011.
Page 5 Status Standard Diesel Buses Daimler u The expected award for this project is March, 2011. u The first bus is expected to be delivered in September, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by December, 2011.
Page 6 Status Standard Diesel Buses New Flyer u The expected award for this project is March, 2011. u The first bus is expected to be delivered in July, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by December, 2011.
Page 7 Status Artic Buses Nova u Project was awarded in May, 2009 and all buses were received as of June, 2010. u Results of the evaluation indicate the following: Improved MDBF reliability. Fuel economy up 25% over current articulated buses. u NYCT will procure an additional 328 Nova artics based on these results. Nova is the only structurally qualified manufacturer of articulated buses at this time.
Page 8 Status Artic Buses New Flyer u Board approval to award this project will be requested in June, pending pre-qualification of bus on shaker table. Qualification of this bus will permit competition for upcoming articulated bus procurements.
Page 9 Status Express Buses Prevost u Project was awarded in January, 2011. u The pilot bus is expected to be delivered in July, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by January, 2012.
Page 10 Status Turbine Buses DesignLine u Based on their performance, it was determined that these buses are not reliable to proceed with a larger evaluation. u All monies related to the initial test fleet of 8 buses have been returned to the MTA in accordance with the contract.
Page 11 Next Steps Award and evaluate all remaining test fleets. Continue to solicit the participation of other manufacturers. Apply lessons learned and expand competition on future bus procurements. Explore new technologies, such as a full electric bus.
