Civic Address Considerations for Austria draft-wolf-civicaddresses-austria-00 IETF 70, Dec 2007, Vancouver, BC, Canada Karl Heinz Wolf Alexander Mayrhofer nic.at GmbH

Motivation RFC 4776 asks for civic address considerations documents for individual countries Ensure interoperability, PSAPs certainly want to rely on finding location information types in a defined element –Never confuse a PSAP agent Guideline for usage of PIDF-LO elements to avoid misinterpretations –Consistent (national) mapping scheme required

What is in the draft? Mapping of Austrian civic address elements to existing PIDF-LO elements (incomplete for now) Problem statement house numbers –Mapping options Address codes –Address URN idea

Problem: House Numbers „Hauptstrasse 1a - 5a Block 1b Haus 2c Stiege 1“ “Lazarettgasse 13A - 13C” PIDF-LO knows just two elements for house numbers –HNO: house number (numeric part only) –HNS: house number suffix Statistik Austria knows 20 data fields related to the house number –Categories: estates, buildings and usable units Even revised-civic-lo does not solve this problem

Mapping to PIDF-LO Most elements can be easily mapped –but the most important one (house number) not Options to map house number –Omit all address parts that do not fit in Certainly unacceptable (incomplete address) –Violate intended purpose of element (re-definition) Nobody likes that, but it would work… –Concatenate elements: Loss of information, no reversal possible Mixture with previous option possible… –New civic address elements? “HN1”... “HN20” similar to “A1” … “A6”? Definition of “HN” mappings local matter

Austrian Address Codes Additional code element Codes by Statistik Austria –Address code (“Addresscode”) –Address subcode (“Addresssubcode”) –Object code (“Objektnummer”) –Usable unit code (“Nutzungseinheitenlaufnummer”) Uniquely identify the civic location –Transport only the “A1” + codes, and look up address?

Next Steps How to proceed with this document? –Is this useful? –Keep as individual or make WG item? This is just one country –Generic template for such “civic address considerations”? –In WG scope? Questions? alexander.mayrhofer@nic.at karlheinz.wolf@nic.at
