6 Stress: the response of the body to the demands of daily living

7 Symptoms Frequent stomach upsets Trouble sleeping Feeling tired all of the time Feeling burned-out at school Frequent migraine or tension headaches Being impatient with other people

8 Stressor: a source or cause of stress

9 General adaptation syndrome (GAS): a series of changes that occur in the body when stress occurs. There are three stages.

11 1.) Alarm stage: first stage in which adrenaline is secreted into the bloodstream Adrenaline: a hormone that prepares the body for quick action

12 Resistance stage: the second stage of the GAS when the body attempts to return to normal. Adrenaline is no longer secreted. Heart rate and blood pressure decrease. Digestion begins again. The muscles relax and respiration returns to normal.

13 Exhaustion stage: the third stage of the GAS in which wear and tear on the body increases the risk of diseases and accidents. This stage of the GAS is usually not experienced if people know how to manage stress

14 Eustress: a healthful response to a stressor Distress: a harmful response to a stressor What are some examples?

15 Stress Management Skills: techniques to cope with the body changes produced by stress, helps prevent the exhaustion stage of GAS, helps your body return to its normal state.
