2 What is Caffeine? Caffeine is a bitter , white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a stimulant drug often derived from tea or coffee and used in medicine chiefly as a mild stimulant and to treat certain kinds of headache

3 How is Caffeine made? Beverages made from the nuts, seeds or leaves of these plants are major sources of natural caffeine, such as coffee, made from the Coffea arabica plant Soft drinks, like Coca Cola, made from Kola nuts Tea made from the leaves of Thea sinensis Cocoa, used to make chocolate, contains caffeine as well as theobromine, another xanthine.

4 How can Caffeine be abused?
Excess drinking of coffee and tea may lead to addiction to caffeine as a stimulant, resulting in tension, headache, insomnia, racing heart and in severe cases, malnutrition through loss of appetite. Caffeine abuse, which is often coupled with nicotine abuse, may go unrecognized because coffee drinking is commonplace and socially acceptable; it is fully recognized as a drug problem

5 Continued… When caffeine consumption is halted, it can lead to a “crash”, including irritability, anxiety, loss of concentration and other withdrawal symptoms. An acute overdose of caffeine can cause caffeine intoxication. This condition is similar to overdose from other stimulants. In extreme cases, psychosis and death may occur.

6 What are some side effects of Caffeine?
Common side effects are dizziness; irritability; nausea; nervousness Higher doses of caffeine can cause anxiety, restlessness, and sleep disorders In other cases it can cause breast cancer for women Psychiatric side effects have included confusion and psychotic symptoms

7 Is Caffeine legal or illegal?
Caffeine is one of the most popular drugs in the world. We drink caffeine in coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, energy drinks, and soda There are many side effects if you consume too much caffeine, so caffeine should be consumed in moderation
