3 The Rainforest  Dense vegetation  The canopy (continuous layer of leaves) can reach 130 ft.  Sunlight seldom reaches the floor.

4 The Rainforest  Earth’s largest rainforest, 1/3 of South America.  Contains the most species of plants and animals than anywhere else on earth.

5 Tropical Savanna  Hot temperatures and abundant rainfall.  Extended dry season  Grasslands such as the llanos

6 Humid Subtropical  Short mild winters  Long, hot, humid summers  Pampas = short grasses

7 Desert  Atacama Desert (Chile) – Created by the rainshadow effect of the Andes Mountains.  No rainfall has ever been recorded in some places.

8 Steppe  Hot summers, cool winters, light rainfall.  Grassy or lightly forested.
