Ice Hockey хоккей на льду The Russian men's national ice hockey team is the national ice hockey team of Russia. They are rated number one in the IIHF World Ranking (with 3980 points). They have been competing internationally since 1993. The team’s nickname is The Big Red Machine. (Большая Красная Машина) Vyacheslav Bykov is the head coach of the team Ilya Kovalchuk is the team captain. The team colours are red, white and blue, like the Russian flag.

The Soviet Union won all of the Bandy World Championships from the start in 1957 until 1979. Bandy is a team winter sport played on ice. Skaters use sticks to direct a ball into the opposing team's goal. The game is played on a rectangle of ice the same size as a soccer field. Each team has eleven players and one is the goalkeeper. A standard bandy match consists of two halves of 45 minutes each. The offside rule is also similar to football.

Tennis теннис Tennis is really popular in Russia and Russia has produced lots of famous tennis players like Igor Andreev, Andrei Chesnokov and Elena Dementieva At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Elena Dementieva won the gold, Dinara Safina won the silver and Vera Zvonareva won the bronze. The Russian Federation has won the Fed Cup 4 times, in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008.

Chess шахматы In Russia, chess is a popular pastime and is regarded as a noble profession. Many write short stories and poetry about the game. It has been dominated by Russians after 1945 (post war) Mikhail Botvinnik was the winner of the World Chess Championship in 1948, he started an era of Soviet dominance in the chess world. It has been found that the methodological teaching of Chess helps increase the IQ and develops a new form of thinking. Chess has also been regarded as a training ground for Russian political life.When children show talent they are educatedby professional coaches to bring them up to a mature standard of play.
