ICEL Psalm 90 A prayer of Moses the man of God. 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn men back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, O sons of men.” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

ICEL 5 You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning— 6 though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered. 7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan.

ICEL 10 The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. 13 Relent, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants.

ICEL 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. 16 May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. 17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hand s.

ICEL feather in the wind 10 The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

ICEL Our prayer for 2012 16 May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. 17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands. Habakkuk 3 2 LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD. Repeat them in our day…

ICEL Time: An infinite God and finite men 2 Before the mountains were born 4 A thousand years in your sight … 6 In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. 9 All our days pass away 10 Our days may come to seventy years, 12 Teach us to number our days 13 Relent, LORD! How long will it be? 14 Satisfy us in the morning…and be glad all our days 15 Make us glad for as many days …for as many years

ICEL Background: Moses: 3 times 40 years Moses has the years in Egypt, before the Exodus, in mind Gen 47 3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?” “Your servants are shepherds,” they replied to Pharaoh,… “Your servants are shepherds,” they replied to Pharaoh,… 5 Pharaoh said to Joseph,.. “settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.”

ICEL 11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food... 13 There was no food, however, in the whole region… 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. 16 “Then bring your livestock,” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock…”

ICEL Ezekiel 20 Gods wrath for the Israelites in Egypt 7 And I said to them, “Each of you, get rid of the vile images you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” 8 But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me;… So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt. 9 But for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations they lived among and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites by bringing them out of Egypt.

ICEL The Lord is righteous and forgiving Where Holiness and Love meet. 7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. Psalm 130 3 If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness;

ICEL The Lord is compassionate! The Lord is not permissive or tolerant. He is compassionate! Exodus 34:6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness

ICEL Our resolution for the new year? “Lord let us know, teach us!” 12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. 12 To number our days aright let [us] know, And we bring the heart to wisdom.
