BELL WORK: Get your homework out and be ready for the HW quiz!
In one COMPLETE sentence, explain how the nervous system and the digestive system work together. BELL WORK: Get your homework out and be ready for the HW quiz!
2
CO: I will describe how the cardiovascular system interacts with other body systems. LO: I will write notes. I will monitor my own heart rate and answer questions.
3
Circulatory System
4
What is the circulatory system?
The circulatory system carries blood and dissolved substances to and from different places in the body. The heart has the job of pumping these things around the body. The heart pumps blood and substances around the body in tubes called blood vessels. The Heart and blood vessels together make up the Circulatory System.
5
Know the Hearts location and its relation with its neighbors.
Figure: 8.6 Title: Location of the heart. Caption: (b) The heart is located in the chest cavity.
6
How does the Heart work? STEP ONE blood from the body blood from the lungs The heart beat begins when the heart muscles relax and blood flows into the atria (top of heart). Blood comes from the body (lacking oxygen) and from the lungs (full of oxygen)
7
How does the Heart work? STEP TWO The atria then contract and the valves open to allow blood into the ventricles (bottom of heart).
8
...And the cycle starts over!
How does the Heart work? STEP THREE The valves close to stop blood flowing backwards. The ventricles contract forcing the blood to leave the heart. At the same time, the atria are relaxing and once again filling with blood. ...And the cycle starts over!

8.8 Title: Blood flow in the heart. Caption: (c) Blood flows through the heart from the atria to the ventricles.
10
Blood from the heart gets around the body through blood vessels.
There are three types of blood vessels: a. ARTERY b. VEIN c. CAPILLARY
11
The ARTERY Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
the elastic fibers allow the artery to stretch under pressure thick muscle and elastic fibers the thick muscle can contract to push the blood along.
12
Veins carry blood towards the heart.
The VEIN Veins carry blood towards the heart. veins have valves which act to stop the blood from going in the wrong direction. thin muscle and elastic fibers body muscles surround the veins so that when they contract to move the body, they also squeeze the veins and push the blood along the vessel.
13
The CAPILLARY Capillaries link arteries to veins
they exchange materials between the blood and other body cells. the wall of a capillary is only one cell thick The exchange of materials between the blood and the body can only occur through capillaries.
14
what’s in BLOOD digested food red blood cells white blood cells oxygen
waste (urea) platelets carbon dioxide plasma hormones
15
Red Blood Cells contain hemoglobin, a molecule specially designed to hold oxygen and carry it to cells that need it. a biconcave disc that is round and flat without a nucleus can change shape to an amazing extent, without breaking, as it squeezes single file through the capillaries.

Heart Rate Lab! Read and answer ALL FOUR QUESTIONS on the front page.
When everyone in your group has written answers to the questions, practice taking a heart rate. Instructions are found on page 2. As a group, come up with a hypothesis you can test in class TOMORROW. If I (do this)_, then _(this will happen)_ because _______________________________________. As a group, plan the procedure for your experiment.
