The picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde Anna Zlevorová 2.A

Oscar Wilde Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was born 1854 in Dublin. Irish writer, poet, playwright, novelist, also fairy tale writer He married Constance which he had 2 sons with- Cyril and Vyvyan Unfortunatly he was charged with gayness. Gayness was illegal in Britain in this time so he was doomed to forced labour. After that he was outcast and he died in poverty 1900 in Paris.

Main characters Dorian Gray is handsome young man. He has no parents. He has good taste. Along the way of story he seems to be heartless and quite superficial Henry Wotton is calm and thoughful. He likes philosophizing. He despise poor people. Basil Hallward is really honest young artist. He doesn´t mind a society problems because he has his own background-atelier. In my opinion he is very sensitive.

Story Basil Hallward paints a picture of his friend Dorian Gray. It is amazing picture, the most important work of his life. Once Dorian listens Basil´s friend Lord Henry talking about importance beauty and youth in today life and says a wish. The wish is going to change his life. The picture becames a mirror of Dorian´s soul. Dorian himself is nice and young forever but the picture is variable. At first he is glad to be like this. But with time he finds out that the picture is his curse. Dorian is heartless suddenly. He has no problem with death of his sweetheart and murder of his friend. Finally he wants to destroy the picture with confidence redemption. So he holds knife and kills the picture. But the picture is real reflection of himself. So he comitts suicide.

Likes I find possitive than there is few of characters. Interensting for me is topic of friendship and love even homosexuality, matter of conscience,.. Although novel is aged it has still current theme. I really like the book as whole. Dislikes There is many direct speeches so i had to return time to time and read the lines again to understand who is exactly talking.
