Today we will compute examples (of positive integer powers of nonnegative integers) as repeated multiplication. compute=to solve positive integer =whole numbers greater than zero nonnegative integers =positive numbers

Positive integer- a whole number greater than 0. Nonnegative integer- a whole number greater than 0. Power or Exponent- a mathematical notation indicating the number of times a quantity is multiplied by itself. –A power or exponent is placed to the right of and above another number.

3 4 3x3x3x3 81 Multiply 3x3x3x3 = 81 3 1 3 3 3 4 3 2

It is important to know how to read and write exponents because they are used when finding the area of certain places. It is on your grade level standards probably all the way until you graduate 12 th grade What other reasons can you think of why it is important to read and write exponents?

Definition of Exponent An exponent tells how many times a number is multiplied by itself. 3 4 Base Exponent

Repeated Multiplication Sometimes multiplication is done over and over and over. To write 3x3x3x3 we write 3 4

What an Exponent Represents An exponent tells how many times a number is multiplied by itself. 3 4 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3

Products of powers with the same base can be found by writing each power as a repeated multiplication. To write 5x5x5x5 we write 5 4

Fall 2004 9 Combining Exponents

EXPONENTS Writing numbers with exponents is a method to write repeated multiplication Five squared is: Four cubed is: Two to the fourth power is:

What does the dot mean? 2. 2. 2 =16 The. (dot) means you multiply

EXPONENTS Five squared is: Four cubed is: Two to the fourth power is:

Write as using exponents 5 4 5. 5. 5. 5 =

What is the Exponent? 5. 5. 5. 5 =5 4

What is the Exponent ? 8. 8. 8. 8 =8 4

Now you try Write as Exponent 7. 7. 7. 7. 7 =7 5

Now you try Write as Exponent 8. 8. 8. 8. 8 = 8 5

What does the dot mean in 2.2.2.2? How do you write 5.5.5.5.5 in exponent form? 5 The dot means you multiply. 5
