3 Our Disaster Relief Operations are based on the Request of the Receiving Countries or International Organizations Defense Minister orders the SDF to dispatch its units Foreign Minister consults with Defense Minister. PROCEDURES Mainly the Asia-Pacific region AREAS

4 FIELDS OF IDR Medical Services such as first aid medical treatment and epidemic prevention Transportation of goods, patients and disaster relief personnel by helicopter, etc. Ensuring water supplies using water- purifying devices Note: JSDF may use transport planes and transport ships for relief activities.

8 IDR Operations at off Sumatra and Indian Ocean(2004 26th of December Occurred a big earthquake west off Sumatra Island of Indonesia and a tsunami in the Indian Ocean 27th of December Thai Government requested an aide to the Japanese Government 28th of December Request from Foreign Minister, MOD decided to dispatch the MSDF vessels 3 rd of January Request by the Indonesian Government Japan dispatched on SDF units 6th of January ASDFs Airlift units, MSDFs maritime units, and GSDFs medical units to devastated areas mainly Banda Aceh, Indonesia. 26th of December Occurred a big earthquake west off Sumatra Island of Indonesia and a tsunami in the Indian Ocean 27th of December Thai Government requested an aide to the Japanese Government 28th of December Request from Foreign Minister, MOD decided to dispatch the MSDF vessels 3 rd of January Request by the Indonesian Government Japan dispatched on SDF units 6th of January ASDFs Airlift units, MSDFs maritime units, and GSDFs medical units to devastated areas mainly Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

Issued additional unit order. 4th June: Additional medical unit departed on JASDF C-130x2 and commercial aircraft 5th June: Additional Medical unit arrived at damaged area and started relief operation. 13th June: JDA directed redeployment order. 16th June: The relief operation on site ended. 27th May: Earthquake occurred in the vicinity of Indonesia/Java Island 28th May: GOJ determined to supply emergency relief, to dispatch JICA team. 29th May: JDA directed preparation for dispatch 30th May: JDA dispatched advance party 31st May: JDA directed order for dispatch 1st June : JGSDF Medical unit departed on JASDF C-130x2 and commercial aircraft 2nd June: JGSDF Medical team arrived at damaged area and started relief operation.
