Strategic Research Areas “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”

Responding to key challenges In June 2009, KTH was awarded MSEK 579 from the Strategic Research Call for Applications advertised by the Swedish government KTH will take part in 11 strategic research programmes; and will be lead university in five of them 22010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

Responding to key challenges These five programmes are: ICT: The Next Generation Biotech: Science for Life Laboratory Transport: TrenOp E-Science: Swedish E-Science Centre Production Engineering: XPRES KTH will also play a substantial role in: Energy: StandUp, in partnership with Uppsala University 32010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

Funding the SRAs annually Energy2.5 MEUR/year2012 – E-Science1.1 MEUR/year2012 – Manufacturing Eng1.4 MEUR/year2012 – IT and Mob. Comm.3.0 MEUR/year2012 – Transport Research2.5 MEUR/year2012 – Molecular Biosc.3.4 MEUR/year2012 – 42010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

Taking research to the next level funding should be used to develop key areas in the long term, often through recruitment of key positions (tenure track) these areas should aim to perform at the highest international standards social and economic impact are important these areas should also develop further funding streams 52010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

Forming tomorrow’s production industry XPRES is a joint initiative between KTH, MDH and Swerea, together covering the fields of production processes, production systems and digital engineering. XPRES relies on four pillars of research: manufacturing for emergent materials and technologies, taking a life cycle approach to product realisation, adaptive and responsive production. The XPRES vision is to form an environment that creates lasting value for Sweden’s leading-edge manufacturing industries and for society as a whole. MDH Mälardalen University SWEREA Swedish group of R&D institutes 62010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

The policies of transportation Together with LiU and the Swedish Road and Transportation Research Institute, KTH is creating TRENoP: a research initiative aiming at enabling the transport system to become greener, smarter and safer through the integration of policy and technology. The initiative will focus its research on the development of innovative transport concepts, development of intelligent decision-support systems, and the study of implementation issues. LiU Linköping University 72010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

Science in the service of life The SciLifeLab is a joint initiative between KTH, SU and KI. It will bring together top researchers in molecular biosciences to focus on five research areas: genome sequencing, proteome profiling, high- throughput functional genomics, bioimaging and bioinfomatics. The vision is to make SciLifeLab one of the top-five centers in the world for high-troughput bioscience, creating an internationally outstanding research environment. SU Stockholm University KI Karolinska Institutet 82010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

Researching the information age TNG is a joint initiative between KTH, SU, SICS and ACREO that will allow Sweden to respond strategically to the challenges of paradigm shifts in information and communication technology (ICT). Research will focus on four areas: multimodal user interfaces, affordable and sustainable ICT infrastructure, the “ICT of things” in industrial applications, and managing complex and dynamically evolving ICT systems. The long term mission is to further develop the consortium and Stockholm as the leading world center of ICT research and innovation. 10 Shaping a new scientific landscape SeRC is a joint initiative between KTH, SU, LiU and KI using the two largest high-performance computing centres in Sweden and bringing together a corps of leading Swedish IT research teams and scientists. Research will focus on the collaboration between tool makers and tool users, distributed resources, database technology, numerical analysis, visualisation and interaction, mathematical modeling, and parallel algorithms. Ultimately, SeRC will strengthen and shape the emerging e-Science landscape in Sweden. 11 Actively supporting top research Vice President for Research Structures and Content bears overall responsibility for the development of the SRAs at strategic level Research GO will provide unified, systematic support to the SRAs, and report progress to KTH management and its funding agencies each SRA has a Principle Investigator and Management Team 112010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se

Supporting world-class performance Coordination: Director and six SRA Representatives Communication Recruitment Finance Impact Goals for the support team: to support the efficient establishment of the SRAs to develop systems for supporting the Management Teams of the SRAs in tracking and communicating their work to provide information for the annual, mid-term and 5-year evaluations 122010-04-14KTH Royal Institute of Technology www.kth.se
