And when at last their work was done, They were proud of what they had wrought. For the things they had worked into the child Could never be sold or bought! And each agreed she would have failed if she had worked alone. For behind the parent stood the school, and behind the teacher stood the home! We are a partnership

17 How Can You Help? Encourage an understanding of how books work. Knowing that we get information from both pictures and text. Discuss the story. Look at and talk about printed language in their environment, on food packets, road signs, labels and leaflets. Attend our reading meeting due at the beginning of January!

18 Writing “Wiggles and squiggles”. They begin to ascribe meaning to these marks.. Fine motor skills. Gross motor skills - strength in shoulder.

19 How can you help? Encourage children to draw, paint etc Show children your writing, shopping lists, things to do, birthday cards. Make scrap books, write postcards, party invitations. Develop fine motor skills by cutting, sewing, dot-to-dots etc. Writing is exciting! Point out writing in the environment.

20 Covers counting, sorting, matching, patterns, comparing and connections Children work with numbers, shape, space and measures. Children learn through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. Maths

21 Point out numbers around you, on houses, cars, television channels, cookers and microwaves. Say number names in order as you climb the stairs, count teddies on a bed, plates on the table etc. Compare quantities, who has the most sweets, which shopping bag is heavier?. Let them see you using money; allow buying of items when you are together Talk about numbers; is it a big number / small number / what is the next number? Encourage recognition of numerals. Talk about size and shape of things. What can you do to help?

22 Understanding the World Positive attitude to discovery, to explore and to experiment, To predict, to investigate and observe. Solve problems. Explore the world around them. Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change Ask questions about why things happen and how things work. Identify features of living things, objects and events. Use different forms of technology to support their learning.
