2  Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives & solvents used to give out a pleasant scent  Perfumery, as the art of making perfumes, began in ancient Mesopotamia & Egypt  It was further refined by the Romans & Persians  Perfume, in its strictest sense, is a blend of fragrant oils diluted in a high-grade alcohol  Concentration varies from about 15—40 % oil, alcohol being about 90—95 % pure

5  Fragrance types reflect the concentration of aromatic compounds in a solvent  Intensity & longevity of a perfume is based on concentration, intensity & longevity of aromatic compounds, or perfume oils used  As percentage of aromatic compounds increases, so does intensity & longevity of the scent  Common types of Fragrance & their percentage of aromatic compounds  Balm around 1-5%  Eau de Cologne around 3-5%  Eau De Toilette around 5-15%  Eau de Parfum around 10-20%  Parfum around 20-40%

6  Compounds that contribute to top notes are strong in scent  Very volatile, & evaporates quickly  Middle note compounds form the heart or main body of a perfume  Lasts about 10 to 60 minutes  Base & middle notes together are the main theme of a perfume  Long lasting fragrance  Perfumes have 3 fragrance notes which unfold over time  They are created carefully with knowledge of evaporation process of the perfume
