1 Writing a Skill-Based Resume Name & Address Objective Skill Statements Work History Education Highlights/Skill Summary Components: The name used on your resume should be your legal name, not a given nick-name. The address/phone cited should reflect the location you wish to be reached by any potential employer - usually home. If, for some reason, you wish to be contacted only at work or another secondary address, that one should be used on your resume. The Objective is a statement specifying your employment goal including what position type or title you are seeking. This is used to provide potential employers an immediate indication as to where to focus or direct your resume. Example: To obtain a... “Follow your objective with a Highlights of Qualifications section, which provides the resume reviewer with the top reasons why you should be called for an interview. Even though your experience might be diverse, concentrate on including the main reasons why you’re qualified for the goal listed on each resume.” Example: Ten years experience in Human Resource Training and Career Development. Skill Statements should be grouped in categories and should include a description of what skill was demonstrated using an ACTION verb and any quantifying information regarding that task. Listed below is an example of a Skill Statement that might be including under the category of Training and Development: Example: Designed and Delivered a time management training course to 8 Assistant Superintendents. Your work history should be listed in chronological order beginning with the most recent employment information first. Include the years you were employed there, what your title was and the name of the organization. Example: 1995-PresentDirector of Employee RelationsAcme Corporation Like your work history, your educational history should also be listed in chronological order beginning with the most recent first. Include the type of degree you were/are seeking, the name of the educational institution and the year of actual/expected graduation. Example: M.S. Human Resource Development, Oakland University, Expected Graduation April 2001.

The top 1/3 of your resume should be designed to catch and hold the attention of a potential employer. In 5 or 6 lines, list or explain your most pertinent skills related to the position you are seeking. These should be aligned with what the employer is seeking for the position.
